Re: XP problems since KP890830 update

KB890830 is the update to the Malicious Software Removal Tool. Unless
the Sound Max drivers were erroneously detected as malware or, were in
fact infected, then the updated MRT should have nothing to do with this
issue.
Open the mrt.log to find out what, if anything, was detected.

To check the log, copy & paste the below into the Open: line from
Start > Run

%windir%\debug\mrt.log
Click OK or press Enter

Scroll down to the bottom of the log for the most recent entry.
If an 'infection' was found the log will state so.
