Trying Linux (Ubuntu) - failed miserably

I just downloaded ubuntu-7.10-alternate-i386.iso

I understood that, if I burned this to a CD, my computer would boot
from the CD to the LINUX (ubuntu) OS.

Folders on the CD are:
.disc
dists
doc
install
isolinux
pics
pool
preseed
Files on the CD are:
cdromupgrade
md5sum.txt
README.diskdefines
ubuntu

When I boot from the CD, there are seven options:
Install in text mode
OEM Install (for manufacturers)
Install a common Linux system
Check CD for defects
Rescue a broken system
Memory test
Boot from first hard disk

None of them, as far as I can see, will boot my computer in Ubunto
(Linux?). The last one (Boot from first hard disk) boots the system
to Windows XP.

What am I doing wrong?
Am I getting off on the wrong foot already?

Thanks for any suggestions!
