Thank you, Andrew, and all the others who replied.
This certainly seems to be a newsgroup with a lot of friendly and
helpful people.

I have downloaded the Live CD, and the computer boots from it, using
Ubuntu.
There are other issues now (the main and first one being that my
screen (a 19" LCD) shows an error message "Out of Range" which I have
not been able to get rid of, so far.

However, I'll soldier through, see what I can do, and come back for
more help if I can't get anywhere.
