When you first add images to the Library,
it has to populate the database... that could
be the cause of the slowdown. You'll see the
number remaining in the lower right corner
of the screen.
If that's not the cause...it could be a resource
issue. Maybe closing all programs before
opening the library would help and also doing
some maintenance could help:
Running Disk Cleanup, Error Checking and
Defrag on a regular schedule is a good idea.

in Windows XP

(check the two boxes..."Automatically fix file
system errors" and "Scan for and attempt
recovery of bad sectors") the utility will run
the next time you restart your computer.
(run error checking repeatedly until it finds
no errors)

Drive Volumes in Windows XP

Also, running a virus program while the library
is open can slow your system if it is scanning
your files.
A larger hard drinve and more RAM would be
a good improvement and increasing the size
of your virtual memory paging file could help also:

With the number of images you are cataloging
it would be a good idea to do regular backups
of the database.
You'll find it at:
C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\
Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\
POD\Pictures.pd3
If you wish to do a search for Pictures.pd3...
be sure to include "Hidden Files and Folders"
To restore the database...just drop your
backup copy in the POD folder and allow
it to replace the current one. Beware that
this database only includes thuimbs and
metadata...*not* the image files.
Finally...archiving does not move your images
from their original locations unless you choose
to delete after the archive. Then they are
completely removed from your hard drive
and can be accessed on the disk/s from
the library.
If you choose to archive and delete...I would
suggest that you make a backup copy of the
images first. If anything goes wrong during the
archive / delete process you could lose the
files.
