Lightbulb Upcoming Server Hardware upgrades

Dear members,

As most of you are aware of, we will be migrating to the latest major version of vBulletin (v4) very soon. The v4.0.0 was released early this year but we were holding the upgrade till the product become stable. Currently it's in v4.0.2 and majority of critical bugs are fixed. Also most of the Add-on products we use are already supporting this new vBulletin version. So we'll have the upgrade very soon.

Now this new version of the forum software includes a portal system and is considerably resource intensive. To cope with the future demands we've decided to upgrade a few critical hardware components of our already powerful server. The changes will be:

RAM : 8GB High performance Server Class RAM
CPU : 2 * Intel Quad Core Xeon 5410 - 2.33GHz (Harpertown) - 2 x 12MB cache
Connectivity: 100 Mbps unlimited

We are still discussing the upgrade schedule with the techs. Expected downtime is 30 minutes.

I'll update this thread with more details soon.

Re: Upcoming Server Hardware upgrades

Server upgrade is completed. The downtime was around 45 minutes (1.20 AM to 2.05 AM CST on 02/24/2010).

All services are up and running. We are closely monitoring the performance but if you notice any problems feel free to share.

I'm not even sure if Corei7 based Xeon CPUs are available. In any case they'll be extremly high priced for sure.

I don't know if this has anything to do with the problem I've been having but I've noticed a difference. It seems like it takes longer to load the TechTalkz page and sometimes it fails and says it was taking too long, try reloading the page again.

Re: Upcoming Server Hardware upgrades

I haven't experienced any of those, maybe your FireFox needs to be updated?

When did this start happening? This is an upgrade, so pages should load a bit faster.

I'd say about 3 weeks ago, give or take a day or 2. I remember when I first joined this forum back in the beginning of February, it was quick and I never had this problem. It's not really a "problem" for me, I just wanted to let you know because this is the only website it happens to. It could just be coincidence.

Our tech found this in the logs and changed the settings. Let's see if it fixes the problems.
