If I buy a 3.5mm to 3.5mm jack can I plug one end into my ipod nano and the
other end into my HIFI system via the headphone socket (3.5mm jack) and will
the sound output on the HIFI speakers ?

NO, you will have to connect it to an input, the headphone socket is an
output.

look for an aux connection on your system. If there is one you should be
able to buy a 3.5 jack to whatever your aux connections are. Probably twin
phono, so one of these would do the job
