ipod 3rd gen and installation stumped
Bought a 3rd generation ipod and am having problems with it.
I have the latest itunes 7.5 on my mac powerbook and when I plug the ipod in its not recognised, my external dvd firewire burner is though so I know its not the port. Have only one port so plugged the ipod in by daisychain and straight to the mac still nothing, looked on the net and cant find anyway of getting it working although I can listen to the music via headphones that is already on the ipod, notice that the ipod has been formatted for windows but havent got a windows machine to try it on. Any ideas? I presume the firewire lead is ok as when I plug it in it shows charging on the ipod. Originally had leopard on and have even gone so far as putting tiger back on and updating it but still nothing. system: Tiger itunes 7,5 and updated ipod 3rd gen with click wheel powerbook G4 titanium |

Is that the one you have? If not, and the wheel actually depresses at the four compass points - the click wheel - then it might be the first to use usb to sync and charge? Have you tried it with a usb cable? Danny |

Get the standalone iPod updater app, and use that to reformat the iPod. Start here: <http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/earlier/> Cheers, Chris |

Shame there isnt a way of resetting the ipod back to manufacturers default ie: mac format, without the computer!!!! > > its the one with the touch wheel, I only have a firewire cable for it. > > Thanks any help would be appreciated as I cannot see it either in > > itunes or finder. > > Have had an email from the previous owner who said he formatted it in > > windows so I need to somehow format it in mac. catch 22 at the moment. > > Get the standalone iPod updater app, and use that to reformat the iPod. > > Start here: <http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/earlier/> > > Cheers, > > Chris |

Try the *standalone* updater from <http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ipodupdater20051117.html> Also try Apple's troubleshooting page: <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60950> Cheers, Chris |

All of my iPods have been formatted for windows and work fine on the mac. Does anything show up in 'About this mac'? -- Woody www.alienrat.com |

Have downloaded the standalone and same thing it does not recognise that I have an ipod attached. I have sent away for an ipod to usb cable in the hope that I can get a bit further. Woody thats interesting on your ipod, so its not the format which is the problem at least I can rule that one out. You ask me what shows in about this mac - loads what do you need to know? The first bit says. Machine Name: PowerBook G4 15" Machine Model: PowerBook3,5 CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3) Number Of CPUs: 1 CPU Speed: 1 GHz L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB L3 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB Memory: 1 GB Bus Speed: 133 MHz Boot ROM Version: 4.5.3f2 Serial Number: QT3040DBNWL and the firewire bit says Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec I can connect my lacie dvd burner via firewire and it fully works so have ruled out the firewire port. The previous owner says it was working ok in windows and there is some music on and I can hear it via headphones in the ipod ok. Have also tried it in disc mode and its not recognised either so I have started to think its the cable, I hope that it isnt the connector on the ipod but scratching my head a bit now until the usb cable arrives. Thanks guys for you help > > Thanks any help would be appreciated as I cannot see it either in > > itunes or finder. > > Have had an email from the previous owner who said he formatted it in > > windows so I need to somehow format it in mac. catch 22 at the moment. > > No you don't. On my Powerbook with a 3rd gen iPod attached over FW (the PB has FW400 and FW800) it prints: FireWire Device Tree: FireWire Bus: Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec iPod: Manufacturer: Apple Computer [...] So I would say that at a low level your PB is simply not seeing your device. Does anything appear in the system.log (run Console.app) when you connect the iPod? Have you tried the reset options in one of the links I sent? Cheers, Chris |

Re: ipod 3rd gen and installation stumped
Hi Chris
have tried reset and it resets, have done all the diagnostic tests from http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ip...de/index.shtml and to my relief they all pass including the firewire test The firewire tree shows nothing with my ipod plugged in but with my lacie dvd recorder plugged in it shows.. FireWire Bus: Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec > LaCie DVD-RW Firewire: Manufacturer: LaCie Group SA Model: 0x0 GUID: 0xD04B6A1B0C6AD4 Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec Connection Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec Sub-units: > LaCie DVD-RW Firewire Unit: Unit Software Version: 0x10483 Unit Spec ID: 0x609E Firmware Revision: 0x102 Product Revision Level: LC02 Sub-units: > LaCie DVD-RW Firewire SBP-LUN: Capacity: 601.85 MB Removable Media: Yes BSD Name: disk1 OS9 Drivers: No S.M.A.R.T. status: Not Supported So what do you think chris? To me it looks like the ipod is working correctly and so is the firewire port on my mac - it only leaves the cable. ohh did a console and when I plug in the ipod zitch!!! |
