iPod Touch and The Cloud
I signed up for The Cloud's 4 quid a month iPod Touch offer, and to be honest I'm rather disappointed. The hotspots are all over the place, but most of the ones I've tried so far don't give me an IP address - the iPod just sits there with a 169.x.x.x address. Of the five hotspots i've tried recently, I only got connectivity in Kings Cross Station and a random pub in Cambridge. Most recent failure was today at South Mimms services, where it just plain didn't work. Anyone having similar experiences? I'm getting quite disillusioned, and am starting to wonder if I'm better off spending my 4 quid a month on bandwith from Vodafone. |

When I was testing the wireless on the Touch with random open hotspots, I found it could sometimes take quite a long time to actually get a non-169 IP address. Up to three minutes sometimes. I never really narrowed down what the underlying cause was, but it did seem that stabbing 'Renew Lease' had no observable effect. Might have been a signal strength issue I suppose, or some routers that are a bit slow to issue IPs. Or, as you say, the Touch's DHCP client. Jim -- http://www.ursaMinorBeta.co.uk |

Up to three minutes sometimes. Yes. I don't think we're actually getting any service from Cloud. When I get my first bill from O2 I'm going to withhold payment, since the Cloud service is part of what I'm paying for. Simon. -- http://www.hearsay.demon.co.uk |

Even when I can connect, like in the Cafe Nero in the Trafford Centre the connection was dropped several times. Rining their tech support gets you the usual Indian call centre who ask you to tell the hotspot host to turn the router off and then on again. The last hotel I was in with "The Cloud" had the conenction down or over a week and no one seemed to give a bugger about getting it going again. |
