SimCity source code now available

Apparently, as a result of EA donating SimCity to the One Laptop Per
Child program, the game's source code is now freely available:

The README in the .tgz file linked to from the above page includes
this text:

--- snip! ---

Micropolis, Unix Version. This game was released for the Unix
platform in or about 1990 and has been modified for inclusion in the
One Laptop Per Child program. Copyright (C) 1989 - 2007 Electronic
Arts Inc. If you need assistance with this program, you may contact:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Micropolis or email micropolis@laptop.org.

This program is free software: you can redistribute it and/or modify
it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by
the Free Software Foundation, either version 3 of the License, or (at
your option) any later version.

I know Burger had been working on a port of this game at one time but
shelved it due to Maxis' exorbitant licensing fees. Does the above
development mean that this project can be re-examined, or perhaps
started from scratch?

-info on open sourced simcity-

Sweet!

This is what i have always hoped. a port to IIgs would be nice. it is
my opinion that a version of it could run on a //e given that there is
a C=64 version.

Bring it on! i say.

Tristan.

As I understand it the released version is an "updated" codebase to
support the XO. Apparently large portions have been rewritten in C++ so
compiler support might be an issue. Bummer.

According to one of the blog entries:

"@Leo: The original code is basically there (some cleaning up) in the
src distribution. Grab the micropolis-activity-source.tgz file which
contains the C code. The ported C++ code is in the MicropolisCore.tgz file."

I took a quick look, and it does appear that the above statement is
correct. The micropolis-activity-source.tgz does appear to have the C
source code present. I've never done any TCL coding, but I assume all
the .tcl files are for the GUI definition?

At first glance (and it was a quick one), I would guess that the C
source code portion would be possible to port, but the the GUI interface
would need to be re-written from scratch or *heavily* modified.

Now, if only I had a C compiler and a *lot* of time to kill... ;-)

Cheers,
Mike
