HP Notebook/laptop recovery with failed LCD monitor
I have a HP pavilion ZE5170 that got damaged in an auto accident. For a short time immediately after the accident, part of the LCD sreen was functional, allowing me to connect the unit to a monitor to check the condition of the system, although the LCD was degrading quickly as I worked. The only other apparent damage was to the floppy drive, which was destroyed, so I recently removed it from the unit, but the LCD screen is now totally dead, so I have no way of accessing the system, although I have transfered all of my data using a disk caddy. I'd like to use the beast as a small desktop equivalent by hooking it up to a monitor - a SAMSUNG SyncMaster 213T. However, the computer does not bring up the monitor automatically when it is turned on. Can anyone tell me how to bring up the external monitor upon startup? I am running Windows XP Pro w/SP2. I've tried starting up and pressing Fn+F5 to toggle between display options, but to no avail. Does the system need to identify an attached LCD monitor to proceed?

Re: HP Notebook/laptop recovery with failed LCD monitor
I tried repeating the key combo many times, but no response. I just thought that I might be facing another issue. If the system gets to the log in screen, I have no way of knowing that it is waiting for my input. Do I need to log into my user account before the Fn+F5 combo will work?
