Question External LCD monitor for my Laptop - Need some help (Samsung SyncMaster2233sw 22")

Hi guys,

I need some help regarding a Wide Screeen LCD monitor for my Laptop (HP Pavilion dv6275us). I am using it for Internet browsing and watching HD movies ( normal DVDs, 720p &1080p rips). I'm thinking for a 22" wide screen LCD monitor because 24" ones are still costly.

After a bit for searching I found one, Samsung SyncMaster2233sw, which looks okay for me (well, it's FullHD). Now I need to ensure that my Laptop will be able to handle this monitor without any problems.

Here is the technical specs for my laptop & the monitor I'm planning to buy.

SyncMasterâ„¢ 55.9cm (22) wide screen monitor 2233SW - TFT LCD Monitors - Monitors | SAMSUNG

key specifications
  • Screen Size : 55.9cm (22)
  • Resolution : 1920 x 1080
  • Contrast Ratio : DC 15,000:1 (1,000:1)
  • Response time : 5

Intel Core 2 Duo processor T5600
2 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400

As you can see my Laptop don't have any HD video ports. This is where I'm concerned. Will the VGA be able to deliver good video( i mean 1920*1080? Can my Laptop hardware handle 1080p videos? Is there any better alternatives?

Any inputs are welcome.

Cheers,
Strider

Don't worry about HD video ports, VGA port should do the job, just switch the rendering to the graphics card using Media Player Classic Homecinema (comes with K-Lite Mega codec pack).

Here's a nice guide : Accelerate x.264 1080p movies over the GPU Guide

I am using that on my Dell 19" and HD movies look superb. Now i wish I had got the Ultrasharp

Edit : Overlooked, you are using a 7 series card. just buy any cheap 9 series card and it should do the job.

Well, it's a laptop. So no easy way to upgrade the hardware. I've read that with the right drivers and video codecs the current setup can deliver a 1080p output over VGA. Anyway I've ordered the monitor, let's see how it's gonna turn out. The price is Indian Rupees 10500 ( US$ 208). As far as I can say it's a good bargain even considering the lack of HDMI support.

For me the latest forceware driver worked. But even laptops do have upgrade offers, though a bit more expensive than desktop.

Does your laptop have a DVI port? You can use only DVI ports from the screen to the laptop and it'd be a bit of improve over the standard VGA one. Like Baky mentioned you can watch HD movies over VGA, but it depends on the graphics card and whether it can support that resolution. By the way I just recently got a 22Inch LG Flatron W2242T for only (AU $220 with 3 years warranty) monitor replacement over that monitor you have, because it died out on me for some reason. But let us know reply back what you've got up to so far with the configure.

I am expecting the Sumsumg monitor to be delivered today. I'll post back once it's here.

My laptop don't have a DVI post, so I should make it work with VGA. Let's see what kind of a performance the onboard Geforce Go 7400 can provide. If all goes south with the new monitor, I'll probably setup a cheap AMD Phenom X4 based Rig for watching movies.

For testing I've downloaded a 1080p release of Ice Age. It looks crappy in the laptop screen.
