Unhappy realtek ac97 audio contoller

Had loads of problems with my puter, so I deleted everything, formatted and then reinstalled everything again. All is ok now except for my audio; it is very distorted, everytime I use it wether it be a music cd or a dvd and even when I'm on on a website that has audio on it. also I cannot do anything with the volume control as it seems to be stuck, everytime I try to lower the volume it just bounces back up to maximum and lets out a severely loud crackle.
When I have checked the device manager everything is fine on it i.e it says the device is working properly and there is no conflicts, I have even troubleshooted it from there and that was of no help at all, I have also troubleshooted it on the PB website but they won't help as it is not under warrenty.
I got all the correct divers from the PB website and have unistalled and reinstalled the drivers several times but this has not helped, I am thinking I may need to strip my puter down and put in a new sound card(I'm not looking forward to doing this), but before I try this I would like to find out if there are any other generic drivers I can use instead of the proper ones needed for my puter or if there is something I have not done to make it work properly
the aplication is a realtek ac97 audio controller and the driver file is ALC655_5510_enr, this is an updated version of the original which I got from the packard bell website(I have no details on the original driver)
I'm running winxp service pack 2 on a Packard Bell easynote R4622

First make sure you have installed all updates via Windows Automatic updates.
Un-install present drivers, reboot in Safe mode, run Driver Sweeper, select Realtek - Sound and click the 'Clean' button, reboot in normal mode, install latest audio driver from Realtek site, reboot and check audio.

Re: realtek ac97 audio contoller

I am also facing almost the same problem. To quote Mr. spliffythree "Had loads of problems with my puter, so I deleted everything, formatted and then reinstalled everything again. All is ok now except for my audio." The audio driver Realtek AC97 is not getting installed anymore. When I am running the driver, the message says "Installation completed successfully". But when I am playing the Windows Media Player, it is unable to play the audio and is showing the message "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly". PLEASE HELP. I am using XP SP2, with AMD Sempron processor 2600+ and 1.61 GHz, 1GB RAM.

Re: realtek ac97 audio contoller

U not specified ur Motherboard, first u have to find the motherboard model/no:
==>model no: is printed on Motherboard; or download and install CPUZ tool; or from help & support in start menu; or
1)click start
2)go to run
3) type msinfo3

==>For AMD processors, Mboard be ASUS, MSI or Biosta, go the Site of manufacturer and enter the model number there , download the audio driver from there

Re: realtek ac97 audio contoller

thanks nithingeorge83... as per your advice, I installed CPUZ and found out that my motherboard is of Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd. and the model no. is K8M800-8237... I went over to their website and downloaded the audio driver which is Realtek AC97 ver. A3.92... but the problem still persists... when I am trying to play any audio file in AvRack (the software which comes with the Realtek driver itself), its saying "Cannot play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding. (Error=80040256)". I wonder whats the matter. My knowledge in computer hardware or software is very little, and as such I cannot make out any head or tail out of it. Please Help sir.

Re: realtek ac97 audio contoller

Good, Now the problem is because of the Driver conflict, remove all the sound drivers that you previously installed and reinstall the same it will work.

And sorry for the delay....

Re: realtek ac97 audio contoller

Thanks nithingeorge83... the problem has got resolved... yesterday, after going through your post i opened the device manager and got some clue from the device manager troubleshoot page... i went over to the bios and bingo... the ac97 driver was disabled in the bios... as soon as i enabled it and restarted the computer, it automatically started asking for the installation... I installed the driver and everything is alright now...
Thank you sir for finding out time and thinking about my problem. It was due to your advice that I went over to the device manager and subsequently got the problem resolved.
Thank you again. In future, if I face any problem regarding my PC, you will be the first person whom I will contact.
