audio/mouse problems on my gateway

I am new and am having problems with my desktop pc. It has been doing this for about a week. The audio is distorted and acts like it is sticking on a note and replaying it. So an example would be the messenger noise instead of being a brief second ding it plays it for several seconds. Also the mouse is behaving in a very jerky way jumping sometimes all over and other times not moving at all.
my unsuccessful attempts:
I have tried uninstalling and updating the drivers for both the speakers and mouse. I also have tried changing the mouse.
I tried uninstalling items that were added in the last month like my webcam and updated drivers for the graphics card.
I ran anti virus
undated windows vista
I opened it up and cleaned it.

I am not sure what to try next if anyone has any experience or ideas I would appreciate it.

my system:

windows vista
gateway
intel duo core E4500 @ 2.2 GHz
3 GB RAM
32 bit
Nvidia Geforce 8800 GS

Thank you
Heather

Re: audio/mouse problems on my gateway

open task manager and check the cpu usage, especially when the sounds drag and the mouse stops moving.

Re: audio/mouse problems on my gateway

I checked. It stayed under 10% and didn't seem to go up much when the problems occur.
