Realtek HD Audio problem after PC to TV hookup

I recently attached my HP dv7000, with windows Vista and Realtek HD audio manager, to my Panasonic Viera television. When the two devices were connected, I went to

control pannel -> sound -> Digital output --> "Set Default"

in order to stream the sound from my computer to the TV's speakers. The connection worked well, and both audio and video streamed perfectly from my laptop to my television.

However, now that I have separated the two, my computer's audio is horribly distorted. I have tinkered with all sorts of options in the Realtek Audio manager, but unfortunately my experience with computers is very minor.

When I keep the default output device as "Digital Output", there is simply no sound. But when I change the output to "Speakers", the sound works, but is very distorted. For instance, when I play online videos from youtube, it sounds like the orators are talking in a tunnel -- and the sound has an echo when I press pause.

This is very strange because the computer's sound is so different than the sound was before I connected the two devices. Other than changing the outputs, I didnt change any settings. The only other non audio settings that I messed with involve my video card control panel, where I changed the screen formats between the PC and TV (Single Screen, Clone, and Independent Screen).

Since the problem arose, I've tried manipulating the sound format (from CD to DVD to studio quality), changing the volume, manipulating all other possible settings, and finally I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program.

Nothing has fixed the distortion.
Any help would be much appreciated.

In the Realtek HD audio manager see if the equalizer settings or the presets are enabled. Some presets can make the sound distorted.

Also once you uninstall the drivers will the Sound work with Vista's default drivers?
