I am not able to hear any sound in my PC?

I use a Toshiba laptop. I have all my new software installed in it. I am unable to hear any voice with my messenger. I use windows live messenger and yahoo. Both does not work.
Now this has turned to be really frustrating. Can anybody suggest an easy way for updating the drivers. I guess the problem is with the drivers.

First of all, check the Volume mixer, which can be found in the Windows Taskbar's Sound icon.Click on it to check if the yahoo messengers sound is enabled or disabled(you need to open the yahoo messenger app first).
If that doesn't work then you need to download the fix for yahoo messenger sound for Windows 7.Download The Codec from Here and install it.

Just first figure out the cause of issue.
It may be the hardware fault or software memory conflicts
(mostly because of non-updated/old drivers and drivers need replaced).

If errors happens again,
try borrow one working usb sound card from your friend.
Then disable the on-board sound card, and test it again.

Post any results if problems persist ...

Fix the mixer volume upto 100%. Also check in the sound options using the control panel.

Visit the manufacturer website and download the sound card specific drivers.
Before installing the sound drivers, I would suggest to install UAA (Universal Audio Architecture).
