Really confusing microphone problem!

Hi, it's my first time posting here and I normally don't need too much help with my computer but this problem I've run into has got me puzzled.

So some background on what happened: I was on Skype and speaking to some friends with my headset plugged into the front mic jack on my computer and my cat ran across the room yanking on the cord and pulling the headset off my head. At that point I could all of a sudden no longer transmit audio via the mic (none of my friends could hear me) but I could still hear them through the mic.

Initially I thought this meant my mic was broken, so I checked it out on my laptop and another computer and it seemed to working fine. I tried the rear mic jack on my computer and a few other audio jacks to see if my mic would work but nothing seemed to be working. I decided maybe something was wrong with the mic circuit on my motherboard (no idea how the audio on my computer works) so I decided to order a PCI audio card (SOUNDCARD CREATIVE|AUDIGY SE 4L RT) along with a couple of usb - headset converters to see if they might work as a workaround (CommonByte USB 2.0 Audio Headset Microphone Jack Converter Adapter, Logitech USB To 3.5mm Jack Audio Adapter). The audio card was detected once after I plugged it in but then after that my computer never detected it again and I'm not sure exactly why (it doesn't show up in my device manager at all). The USB audio adapters both install fine but have the same problem as my front/rear jack mic ports on my computer.

I have no clue what would cause this to happen - any ideas/help out there?

Re: Really confusing microphone problem!

Hmm Weird problem! The USB-audio adaptor should have worked (I'm using one myself in an old laptop with a broken headphone socket).

Did you properly test the mic in your laptop (like recording an audio clip or doing the Skype call testing)?

Is it possible to get another mic and test it in your PC?

Re: Really confusing microphone problem!

Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling the driver for the audio card?

Uninstall all audio drivers then re-install driver for new device.

If previous configuration was on-board audio, you may need to disable it in the BIOS.
