I recently installed my own home network including phone lines, cable, and high speed internet in each room of my house (including garage). I use Magic Jack for my home phone service with an inexpensive DECT 6 phone system. I have 8 phones that ring and produce excellent quality calls. All DECT 6 phones and a fax machine run from a single Magic Jack unit running the lastest update as of Aug 2009. I have my Magic Jack connected to a externally powered hub to support the extra current needed for multiple cable runs.

I am still using XP and use the method:
start X:\...mjusbsp\magicjack.exe /scf _magicJackPersonalDataRoot Y:\magicJack

This setup has been working without problems for two weeks now and I test the device daily. One of my favorite features is the conversion of voicemails to email. Even at work I am still able to receive messages left in an instant without having to tote around my Magic Jack.

Be forwarned, from one who has learned the hard way.. Do NOT buy a similar device called NetTALK. The device claims to work without a computer "which it does" but, more than half of the features it claims to support "even right on the retail box", it cannot do. No voicemail, no conference calling, no speed dial. Unless you are sitting and staring at the phone waiting for it to ring, well I guess your not going to get the call. This complaint was confirmed true by three customer service and tech support persons at NetTALK. Beware!

Go with Magic Jack it's been tested by thousands of customers. The major retail stores are even willing to carry them. I would not buy a multiyear subscription though. You never know what might be invented in a year or two from now. Somthing possibly better and even cheaper to operate.

I've been using MJ on my my laptop with Windows 7 build 7100. No problems here. It works just as good as it does on my custom desktop running Vista
