Connection question
I have a broadband connection and, although I maintainn an anti-virus and
spyware program, my machine is on all day, and I wondered what was the best, easiest way of disconnecting when not in use, to minimise chances of infection. Regards and thanks in advance Pat Macguire |

A router will provide that much more security as it will typically discard all packets that have not come from an IP address that you have contacted. -- Michael Chare |

I would have thought the answer was obvious, turn the damn thing off..If you're not using it, why leave it on? P. |

I have my router in my bookmarks, and it has a disable the link option, which seems to work, as my traffic monitor stops registering the keep alive polls, I assume tha's what they are, little tick every 10 sec or so. Shields up says I'm totally invisible, which it says is exceptional. You could also unplug the RJ45 link to your PC, ot fit a switch in the RJ45 connection, if it's a short connection to your router the switch will be electrically invisible, unless you are using CAT5 Gigabit. |

All the personal firewalls are crap. Don't be fooled into thinking they offer security or you will become lax and do things you shouldn't. If for some reason you run a bit of malicious software on your machine there is nothing to stop it changing the config of your personal firewall so they do not add security. |
