8Mb broadband

Is it possible, better still does anyone actually get anywhere near an 8Mb
broadband connection? I'd guess you'd have to live next to a telephone
exchange.

What's the situation with cable suppliers?

Ditto. Attenuation goes up for HF as the square of the disance and is
heavily dependent on installed copper type.

I'd say the majority off ADSL max users were between 1.5 and 4Mbps.

I got 6Mb on normal ADSL, and I don't live next to the exchange.

Maybe you'd like to produce some evidence to back up your claim that
"everyone" gets limited so that everyone can get at least 35kbs.

What are your line statistics ? I had a similar problem until a RF filter was
removed from the line. That'll show up in the attenuation figures though.

mentioned a line length of 1.5 miles. That seems to be about right for getting
the max from BT's maxdsl.

You guess wrong. I had Griffin [BT IPstream] which synced up at 8128k, and I
live about 1.5km from the exchange [DMT says 1300-2900m]. I got about
3-5Mbps through. I'm on Be now, syncing at 15.2Mbps and getting about
13Mbps through [from sites like ftp.uk.debian.org, ie real world usage, not
speed tests]. Given that Griffin themselves say "Our experience is that
BT?s network is over-engineered and uncongested",

Until Oct 2006 I had Blueyonder 10M cable which performed flawlessly.
Judging by the amount of pissing and moaning in here, things have gone
downhill since NTL took over.

Yeah. My dad lives only yards (as the crow flies) from the local, non-LLU'd
exchange and get around 7mb.

While cable doesn't work the same way and distance from an exchange does
matter and you are /more likely/ to get a faster speed.

Can you have a look at this, and sort it out so someone other than
yourself can understand it.
