If you cannot un-install Norton then go to services.msc and disable the Norton services.

Re: Major spyware issues - anti-malware software hasn't worked yet

Well, I tihnk I have gotten a majority of my problem solved. I did a search on the text in the actual error message I was getting and found out it was the Trojan "deflob" virus. Someone suggested downloading Windows Live OneCare to remove the offending virus. Since running it, I have not gotten any pop-ups. So, hooray for that.

Only issue now is Firefox still will not work and I cannot access links in search engine results pages (I need to copy and paste the address into the address bar instead of just clicking the link). But those things are minor compared to the pop-up annoyance.

Thank you all for your help.

Make a new profile in Firefox and see if you can access the links.

Do you have a second computer ?

If so personaly I would put your drive into it and scan it from there, That was you can be sure that nothing is running.

And I agree 100% with the above. You have to many cleaning tools running and they will conflict !

Re: Major spyware issues - anti-malware software hasn't worked yet

stuartbe, I do have a second computer, but it is extremely slow and anti-malware scans often freeze because of this computer's inability to process information at a normal speed.

Recently, I have also tried scanning for problems via BitDefender, but I received an error message stating "This computer could not be scanned for viruses" and I was not allowed to update/install ActiveX either. I also recently re-acquired the newest version of AdAware, which detects tracking cookies and items called MRU objects. When I attempt to remove these files, AdAware crashes. I have run this scan in Safe Mode, and the files in question are still there when I scan again in normal mode.

Bakuryu, nothing opened or popped up when I tried to access the Firefox Profile Manager.

make sure you have no running instances of firefox.exe from task manager.

Then add the -p switch to the end of the firefox shortcut url, save the shortcut and then open Firefox with that shortcut. Profile Manager will pop up.

Which files/registry keys are detected ? try manually removing them. Also disable System restore before a scan and deleting files.

Re: Major spyware issues - anti-malware software hasn't worked yet

Bakuryu,

No instances of Firefox are running in my Task Manager. I also tried editing the shortcut name, and I got an error message saying the name was invalid or something very similar to that. I have a feeling I managed to rename the file incorrectly.

System Restore has been disabled too.

My new issue is my internet redirecting me to either a voting site or a Windows XP anti-virus software download site (most likely something fake) when I access certain web domains. I have experienced these new problems when I am on MySpace.com, BlogSpot.com, and one of my other forums. I tried your suggestions from my other topic and my computer is now allegedly free of 120 Trojan infections, but the problems remain, unfortunately.

Aside from AdAware, are there any free virus removal programs that you can suggest?

If you still have popups in Firefox, in the address bar type

about:config

under filter type dom.popup_maximum double click and set the value to 0

Restart Firefox. That will stop 99% of all popups.

Oops. I should clarify that Firefox still will not work at all for me. All of these pop-ups are occurring in Internet Explorer. I cannot block these sites either because they come from a different source each time they pop up. I actually never had pop-ups with Firefox - they were all blocked.

Upgrade to IE7 or in IE6, set your popup blocker to Highest.

Internet Explorer : Tools -> Settings -> Privacy, under Popup Blcoker, check enable "Turn on popup blocker" then click Settings, under 'Filter level' , select 'High : Block all pop-ups'. Click OK to close all windows.
