Re: Cannot access Antivirus Sites/Google/Avast etc.

Take ownership of each of those keys and try deleting them again.

1. Right click on the keyname (left hand side pane), click Permissions.
2. Click the Advanced button and go to the Owner tab.
3. Under 'Change owner to:', select your username and click OK button twice to close both the windows.
4. Again right click on the key name and open Permissions.
5. Under 'Group or user names' see if your group or username is present. If your group or username is not present, then click the Add button to add your username/group.
6. Select your username/group under 'Group or user names', and give Full access to your username/group, under Permissions by checking the box under "Allow" column for Full Control.
7. Click OK button and close the window.

Then right click on the key and choose Delete option.

Now can you run exe files and visit antivirus web sites ?

Ok done that. I've been able to visit virus sites since deleting the rootkit, however, I still can't run executables. Just rebooting now...

Nope still no joy, still getting those error messages and cannot run various programs. For example, if I try to start spybot, I gte the usual error message and the process seems to start but no window is opening for the application.

Are you getting any particular error messages? Can you quote a few or add some screen shots?

Download the attached zip file, extract and double click on the .reg file to merge it with the registry.

Reboot and see if you can run the executable files.

You receive an error message when you try to start a program that has an .exe file name extension

Re: Cannot access Antivirus Sites/Google/Avast etc.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all your help - I've finally rid the PC of that virus/rootkit/trojan.

I used a programme called Malwarebytes Anti-malware. I was able to install this despite various errors but running it just didn't seem to work. So I renamed the mabm.exe executable to mab.exe and tried again. After a few minutes it sprang into life and I was able to clear out the infection. I could then run Spybot and Combofix. I have now run Ccleaner and scandisk and running a defrag and the PC seems to be fresh as a daisy.

Thanks to both you guys for your efforts, I hope my solution is helpful in future.

Re: Cannot access Antivirus Sites/Google/Avast etc.

Ok, campus has the Downup virus all over. First problem I found on my computer was I could not access any antivirus sites. I was running AVG 7.5, uninstalled it and installed Avast. On bootup Avast found 3 infected files. I have run Nortons downup remover and also AVG's version, neither found the virus, but still cant get out to virus sites. Everything else seems fine. Tried to run the "fix" file but would not run, I am on Vista Ultimate. spybot running now.

Re: Cannot access Antivirus Sites/Google/Avast etc.

I am sorry if this is any trouble, but I am having the same problem folks were having at the beginning of this forum with not being able to access antivirus download sites and updates in search engines. Originally my AVG would not do automatic or manual updates when I told it to so I decided to uninstall it and install a different free antivirus program when I realized that I could not access any of the pages. I have tried everything that was said to try to start with all the way up to the combofix and when I tried to drag and drow the file onto the fix file it said pretty much the same thing that all the antivirus downloads said that I tried to download from mirrors and that is that the file is corrupted try a fresh copy etc. So now I am here and my Hijack log is below. I would much appreciate any help greatly!!
