As a first step disable System Restore in all the drives.

Then download and run ComboFix as per this post and post the generated log file here.

Will reinstalling XP wipe out the virus or malworm? I tried it and my computer still can't access some anti-virus sites and Microsoft. Do I have to format it before I reinstall XP? I have never done formating the hard disk.

In most cases a reinstall should fix the problems. But if you are interested in formatting the drive and try again, just delete and create the C:\ drive using Windows XP CD.

Once Windows is installed do not to open any drives. Download latest version of Avast Home edition, install it and update. Do a full system scan and clean any infections found. This should take care of any viri left in your harddisk.

Somehow among several antivirus programs we deleted the virus after reinstalling XP. What I don't understand is that why would any virus still manage to exist after reinstalling XP. I thought reinstalling XP should wipe out the whole hard disk then reformat it. Thanks.

The infections in other drives won't go if you reinstall XP in the same drive it used to be. For a guaranteed sweep you must delete all the partitions using the Windows XP setup and make the entire disk unpartitoned like the below screenshot:

The create a new partition and install Windows into it.

If you already did this then there is some other sources, like an infected USB flash drive.
