I found etrust and fprot the best. Free ones I mainly use avg.
eTrust is pretty decent but never tried FProt. In the freeware market AVG really lags behind Avast.

Re: Best Anti-virus and Anti-spyware?

My school computers had ETrust and they had dedictaed computers for virus scanning.
Only problem was everyone who had a virus plugged it into the computer and furthermore, according to one of the staff, the virus scanner had never picked up a virus.
I personally believe ETrrust to be useless, but this could be attributed to the fact that the technicians(Doubt I spelt that correctly) didn't update it and whatever computer you logged onto, the antivirus said
"ETrsut antivirus is out of date, click this balloon to solve this problem"
"Click"
"Your account does not have administrator access."
Anyway, it was pretty useless and didn't detect most things and then the school got infected by something weird that it alledgedly detected and deleted but only detected and didn't delete, which was weird.
Anyway that is just to say ETrust did not seem very good to me or the 1200 or so students at my school

If updated regularly, most of the Antivirus software will work just fine. But top players like Kaspersky offer better detection rates, less false positives, good performance and better healing of infected files.

Re: Best Anti-virus and Anti-spyware?

You could buy 2-3 licenses of Kaspersky, install it only on those computers dedicated for virus scanning.

For the other computers you could use free antivirus programs.

That way you get maximum protection with minimal costs.

Re: Best Anti-virus and Anti-spyware?

I was having a look through NZ PCWorld magazine and came across their anti-virus article.
Apparently they found a anti-virus called G Data, which I have never heard of to be the best.
Norton 2010 came second and kaspersky came in third.
Apparently G Data detected 99.95% of 650,000 viruses spyware and trojans that the PC World team sent at it. It also had a 70% heuristic detection rate and a decent UI and plenty of stuff to mess around with, options and whatnot.
It was let down on the detection of already active rootkits though, but you can always just download F-Secure's rootkit sweeper(Quite nifty, thanks to whoever posted it somewhere)
I found it interesting that Norton came 2nd and Kaspersky 3rd as Kaspersky is normally better than Norton.

Never heard of G Data, but I'll definitely try it out.

Very interesting. May be Symantec started to listen to customers at last.

Btw. I dumped ESET Smart Security and bought Kaspersky Internet Security 2010. A recent ESET updated screwed up the start-up scanning (100% CPU usage), I ended up removing it from Safe mode.

I guess this was a marketing strategy.........

The guys at Symantec realized that people speak up against Norton and are annoyed of their greedy policy to squeeze even the last penny out of the buyers pocket.

That's why they needed a good review and somebody praising their product.

They didn't convince me. I still think Kaspersky detects and cleans virus/spyware better than Norton.

They have really pushed their marketing for the last two years about how light and unobtrusive it is.

It wasn't true about last years product and I seriously doubt it is true of this years.
They pay people to review it.(PC World?) Pay very close attention to wording in their claims.

To me, it will always be known as NOrtON.

Re: Best Anti-virus and Anti-spyware?

I would say

Commercial Anti Virus

1. Kaspersky
2. NOD 32

Free Ones

1. Comodo Internet Security Suite

There are many others too I know...

Fsecure Blacklight is good for removing rootkits.

Kaspersky is good for now.. But NOD32 is much more smoother.. Maybe Kaspersky has better detection and removla rates than NOD32 but NOD wins in being an unobstrusive antivirus and takes up less system resources..

I havent touched AVG and Avast for a long time now.. Avast is ok but it takes a long time to scan. AVG just fails to be honest.. Even a simple XOR encryption can defeat it.. I have also had experiences where AVG detected the virus but failed to remove it..

Comodo Internet security suite has a nice firewall and anti virus. I beleive they are using clam av in the backend. It has helped me remove viruses that sometimes NOD32 and Bit Defender fail to remove even after detection.

Right now am trying out microsoft security essentials..

Things keep changing rapidly in the anti virus world so what works great now might not be on top in a few months

Re: Best Anti-virus and Anti-spyware?

if u want complete home security for 0 cost, install these:

Comodo Internet Security - excluding Antivirus.
Avast 5 Free
A-Squared Free (no resident protection, only scanner)

& ur PC should be safe from viruses. at least most.
