Post Shawn's Anti Malware, Virus, etc Arsenal list

Here is my list also other tools I use on my system, including friends and family to help prevent and rid of viruses, malware and other varietals.

Custom Host File: Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File

The Hosts file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. This file is loaded into memory (cache) at startup, then Windows checks the Hosts file before it queries any DNS servers, which enables it to override addresses in the DNS. This prevents access to the listed sites by redirecting any connection attempts back to the local (your) machine. Another feature of the HOSTS file is its ability to block other applications from connecting to the Internet, providing the entry exists. You can use a HOSTS file to block ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and even most hijackers. This is accomplished by blocking the connection(s) that supplies these little gems.
Example - the following entry 127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net blocks all files supplied by that DoubleClick Server to the web page you are viewing. This also prevents the server from tracking your movements. Why? ... because in certain cases "Ad Servers" like Doubleclick (and many others) will try silently to open a separate connection on the webpage you are viewing, record your movements then yes ... follow you to additional sites you may visit.
In many cases using a well designed HOSTS file can speed the loading of web pages by not having to wait for these ads, annoying banners, hit counters, etc. to load. This also helps to protect your Privacy and Security by blocking sites that may track your viewing habits, also known as "click-thru tracking" or Data Miners. Simply using a HOSTS file is not a cure-all against all the dangers on the Internet, but it does provide another very effective "Layer of Protection".
For Windows XP SP2 users you should see a Security Center prompt about allowing this connection. [screenshot]
Simply click No and continue. Yes the prompts can be annoying but at least you'll know, however you should not see these prompts if these entries are included in the HOSTS file.

Avast Anti Virus Free 6.0 with Sandbox: avast! Free Antivirus - Download Software for Virus Protection

The AutoSandBox feature allows Avast to automatically run any suspicious program inside the avast sandbox at the moment the program is executed. This ensures that no damage can be done to your OS.

Malwarebytes: Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download
Detect and Protect with Byte

Malware is big and malware is bad. Your computer is constantly at risk from infection by malware including viruses, worms, trojans, rootkits, dialers and spyware. Malwarebytes specializes in fighting malware.

Only the most sophisticated anti-malware techniques can detect and remove malicious programs from your computer. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO combines powerful new technologies designed to seek out, destroy, and prevent malware.

HijackThis: HijackThis - Trend Micro USA

Scan your computer with HijackThis version 2.0.4 to find settings changed by spyware, malware, or other unwanted programs. HijackThis version 2.0.4 is now Windows 7 compatible. It generates in-depth log reports for Windows-operated systems, including Windows 7.

Trend Micro HijackThis is a free utility that generates an in depth report of registry and file settings from your computer. HijackThis makes no separation between safe and unsafe settings in its scan results giving you the ability to selectively remove items from your machine. In addition to this scan and remove capability HijackThis comes with several tools useful in manually removing malware from a computer.

IMPORTANT: HijackThis does not determine what is good or bad. Do not make any changes to your computer settings unless you are an expert computer user.

Advanced users can use HijackThis to remove unwanted settings or files.

Using HijackThis

To analyze your computer, start HijackThis and run a scan. See the Quick Start Guide [link to Quick Start, FAQs and Feedback] for help in running a scan. There are many popular support forums on the web that provide free technical assistance by using HijackThis log files to diagnose an infected computer.

Not an expert? Just save the HijackThis report and let a friend with more troubleshooting experience take a look. A large community of users participates in online forums, where experts help interpret HijackThis scan results to clean up infected computers.

A Linux Live CD: There are plenty of Linux Live Cd distros that can have anti virus software that can scan also rid of viruses on a Windows partition.

Some virus are written so they can not be deleted while Windows is running. A boot-able anti virus program is the answer to get rid of these viruses that are hard to get rid of while Windows is running. Here are a list of Linux Live CD distros. One I recommend is Hirens Boot CD.

The LiveCD List

Look at the list there will be distros that include anti virus tools.
Download the ISO then burn them to a disk.

Hiren's Boot cd has tons of anti virus, and malware tools that can be booted and used. Also used while Windows is loaded. Some of the tools include the tools I mentioned above.

Hiren's BootCD 13.2 - All in one Bootable CD » www.hiren******

Avast BART CD http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_bart_cd.html Windows Anti Virus

Burn the ISO to CD Boot it up.

List of other Anti Virus Rescue Live CD's @ http://www.livecdlist.com/
AVG Bootble Live CD, Bitdefender and more!

I hope this list gives helps you find good tools to help prevent and get rid of viruses, and malware. This list might be updated or others may suggest other tools so come back to this thread occasionally to see if the list has been updated. Please keep your current tools up to date, if any have updates for for virus, malware information please keep them updated.

Re: Shawn's Anti Malware, Virus, etc Arsonal list

HijackThis should only ever be used while being instructed by a malware expert removal person, it is not a program to be used by a novice or even the average user without the expertise of using HijackThis.

Just my opinion ;-)

Well an external hard drive is quite cheap nowadays. You can get a terabyte cheap, even where I live.
