@Dark Star : Just a reminder. Don't forget the nasty multiple account incident happened a few weeks back.

Here, the thread owner wont get any compensation for posting some useful articles. Then why teasing him?

Re: Places where viruses and trojans hide on start up

important thing is that it is useful information

Just had to remove a killer bunch of virus's on the computer at work... pain in the butt. They were preventing me from installing other virus protection, and would cause system BSOD while trying to boot into safe mode. I was able to get around this finally by using online virus scan. Some places they were hiding

C:\Documents and Settings\%user%\Local Settings\temp

System restore in
c:\System Volume Information (one way to get rid of this, is to turn off System Restore. This auto deletes all files in c:\System Volume Information, then turn it back on if you want afterwards)

Hiding in memory, and not detectable by a standard virus scan... found an amazing free tool called F-Secure BackLight. This totally save me after eliminating virus everywhere else.. I couldn't find the last bit, and where it was hiding.

BlackLight. Here is a blurb form company

Quote:
What is F-Secure BlackLight?
F-Secure BlackLight Rootkit Elimination Technology detects objects that are hidden from users and security tools and offers the user an option to remove them. The main purpose is to fight rootkits and all kinds of malware that use rootkits. The F-Secure BlackLight Rootkit Elimination Technology works by examining the system at a deep level. This enables BlackLight to detect objects that are hidden from the user and security software
