Verizon Broadband day pass service--bogus

Dell offers an option of Verizon broadband no contract day pass
service for its laptops.

It's bogus!! there is no such service. You have to sign up for a 2-
year, $60/month contract. No option for the $15/day day pass as
advertised. I bought a Dell laptop and broadband card just for that
option.

Because I just spent a long time talking to both Verizon and Dell and
they both said there is no such service as advertised by Dell.

Your link, which is probably correct says you have to have a Verizon
contract and the day pass is IN ADDITION to the monthly fee. Dell
says--Only need to use BroadbandAccess Built-In a few days a month
while traveling?
Then take advantage of Day Pass from Verizon Wireless for $15 a day -
no long-term commitments required.

I am going to yank the broadband card and get a refund.

I really thought that would be a great feature since I really don't
need to take my laptop on the road that often and can't justify a 2
year contract.

did you follow the link that tom provided and then try to sign up online?
i suspect that dell doesn't get involved (paid) for day-pass customers, so
when you follow the link to the dell site it only offers to sign you up for
the 2 year $59/mo plan. but if you follow the link to 'not registered yet'
on the verizon page it lets you create an account and the decide what server
you want to purchase. never heard of this day pass thing before and think
that it is a very interesting product.

No, I did not go through the sign up process because I didn't want to
accidentally commit myself to $1440 over 2 years.

When I began the sign-up process on my new laptop, I found no option
for day pass, so called Verizon customer support who said they had no
such service and to call Dell. Called Dell and they also called
Verizon and they said you needed the 2-yr contract. Perhaps there is
a flavor of the 2-yr contract that supports pay per use rather that
continuous access, but nobody seems to be able to tell me about it.
Am I missing something?

Dell doesn't get anything from it other than selling me the Verizon
compatible card. But both Dell and Verizon have inforamtion on the
web regarding this service.

Will call Dell again Monday when their broadband sign-up office is
open. I have since emailed Verizon cust. support and asked for an
explanation of the service (if it really exists). It would be great
if you could get it.

I'll bet the Day Pass isn't available in your area. Not all Verizon Wireless
services are available in all areas and calling plans vary from area to
area. I had Verizon wireless in central Illinois and it had less features
for the standard $39.95 than here in eastern PA. More competition here near
Philly, northern NJ and NYC.

It is sold in conjunction with select notebook vendors: Dell, HP, Toshiba,
Panasonic, Lenovo.

Maybe I'm just dumb and assume you don't have to have cell phone
service with them in order to have broadband service. Like I can have
Comcast cable internet without cable TV.

provider. Just a guess.

Yes, you can get internet and not cable from Comcast, but you pay
significantly more for the internet service if you don't have cable

I'm afraid that is what it is turning out to mean. I should have
known that something as convenient and cost-effective as this could
not be real when offered by a cell phone service. So much for "no
long term contracts". Grrr.

According to Verizon's website the way you get either the monthly or daily
service is to:

"Once you've made your purchase and powered up your notebook you will be
prompted with a message highlighting Verizon Wireless BroadbandAccess
Built-in service. Simply press "Activate Now" and follow the prompts to
activate a new account. In a matter of minutes you'll be ready to experience
BroadbandAccess Built-in."
So you have to have already purchased the proper notebook with the correct
wireless card for Verizon and then activate the service. It says in footnote
2 that:

2 Credit card is required. Each session good for 24 hours from time of
activation. Other Data Services and Included Features not available.

I tried entering 80202 into the serach by zipcode and it brought up the same
web page I got for my Zip code.


Did you actually try to activate the DayPass over the air or did you only do
it over the phone?

Did you try the number at the bottom of Dell's Verizon wireless page?:

"Call Dell's toll-free wireless activation center at 1-800-228-6303 after
you receive your notebook to activate mobile broadband service on your
notebook."
