Realtek AC97 Driver not getting installed

I had loads of software and virus related problems with my computer, so I deleted everything, formatted and then reinstalled everything again. All is ok now except for my audio. The audio driver Realtek AC97 is not getting installed anymore. When I am running the driver, the message says "Installation completed successfully". But when I am playing the Windows Media Player, it is unable to play the audio and is showing the message "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly". I should add here that when I am playing a video file, the video is playing alright but sans the sound. PLEASE HELP. I am using XP SP2, with AMD Sempron processor 2600+ and 1.61 GHz, 1GB RAM.
