Sound device issues

Hi, I'm new here.
Well, I've been having some real problems with one of our household computers, and I'm at a total loss for what to do.

We recently bought a computer from a school to replace another computer that had recently fried. Because we were having some admin problems, we had a slightly more tech-savvy friend of our wipe it and just start us over fresh with a new copy of XP Professional. Now, everything is running perfectly fine... Except that there is no sound device.
I went to the device manager and system information and looked everywhere, but it's not showing any sort of sound device installed. My problem with that is, though I'm not exactly great with computers myself, I looked in the computer and it appears as though there is not only a sound card, but it's also part of the motherboard. I'm also pretty sure that the computer had sound when it was at the school we'd bought it from.
I've tried checking the drivers for updates, but I don't think there are any, and I don't even know if I could look for more drivers to download when I don't even know the sound device I should be getting drivers for.
I'm at a loss for what to do, so if anyone would help me, I'd be very grateful...

windows XP trouble shoot:

Select Start > Help and Support
Under Pick a Help Topic, select Fixing a problem
On the left navigation panel, select Games, sound, and video problems

Follow the on-screen instructions until your sound problem is resolved.

If you are having issues in sound device then make sure that you have sound card available in your PC. If sound card is available then download specific drivers for the sound card.
If you are having issues in identifying sound card then I would suggest to use a driver finding tool that will not only search for the uninstalled devices but will also search for the recommended drivers online.
