Question can't change settings in recycle bin properties

hi...i want to turn off the 'do not move files to the recycle bin' setting in my recycle bin properties. however all the settings in properties are grayed out, except for 'use one setting for all drives', and 'display delete confirmation log".

i've tried using the registry edit found on line 64 @ Troubleshooting Windows XP, Tweaks and Fixes for Windows XP, but it didn't fix the issue i'm having. is there some other setting i'm missing?

what windows is that?
what's a 'do not move files to the recycle bin'? that doesn't sound like default windows.
are you part of a domain?
what software is installed in your pc?

Re: can't change settings in recycle bin properties

apologies. i use windows xp, and i'm not part of a domain...i forgot to log in when i posted the original thread. as for software, i have quite a few things, but the only one i have that directly affects the recycle bin is 'ccleaner', which has no settings that allow it to override the recycle bin properties in the way i'm describing.

when i bring up the recycle bin properties, on the global tab, there are normally two settings, 'configure drives independently', and 'use one setting for all drives'. when choosing the latter, which is connected to a box, there is a checkbox that allows you to toggle on/off the option for 'do not move files to the recycle bin. remove files immediately when deleted.'. there is also a slide bar which also helps you adjust the maximum size of recycle bin (percent of each drive). below the box with the available settings, there is a checkbox to allow you to toggle on/off the option to 'display delete confirmation dialog'.

as you can see from this image, which is of my recycle bin properties window, the only options i have available are 'use one setting for all drives', and 'display delete confirmation log'. any files i delete are immediately deleted, and will not appear in the C:/RECYCLER folder, and i have to use a program called 'Restoration' to recover anything. on the tabs for the independent drive configurations, :C and :E, the options there are, of course, also grayed out.

so my questions are these: what could cause this limited functionality, and how can i fix it?

again, apologies for not explaining the problem more distinctly.

i forgot to mention that i have had functionality as far as adjusting these properties in the past, but it's been several months since i needed to, and just noticed the issue.

Re: can't change settings in recycle bin properties

tested it on xp. works fine, which means a 3rd party is blocking it, and not a domain command. sooo...
what apps are in your pc? ignore games & msoffice & yahoo products...

I have also tested it on my pc. It is working fine. I think some virus or program is creating problem. Please search for any unwanted program running in background using task manager and stop it.

Re: can't change settings in recycle bin properties

Born star16 is probably right, i would install MalwareBytes and update it then reboot into safemode and run deep scan just in case it is a virus of some sort, this way it will limit any more damage to system files.

Re: can't change settings in recycle bin properties

@ bugsy: i installed malwarebytes, and it found 24 infected items. after i had it remove them, and restarted my computer, my recycle bin properties are back to normal.

after reviewing the log malwarebytes created, i believe this was the problem:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoRecycleFiles (PUM.Disable.Recycle) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

i posted that so that any of you might use it to help anyone else in the future. thanks to everyone for their help.

Re: can't change settings in recycle bin properties

You should also run another test in safemode and normal mode just to be sure, maybe seem to be a bit overkill but you would be surprised.

Glad its fixed anyway!
