It's the battle of the ages, played out with a new generation of hardware that, for the first time, appears to leave even high-end gaming PCs in the dust. Opinions about Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 vary, but it's pretty clear that both devices kick ass. Looking over the specifications, and listening to representatives of both companies, however, I've come away with a few general thoughts.
From a pure processing standpoint, the PS3 appears to beat the Xbox 360, but the first generation PS3 games are not graphically superior to anything that's available on the Xbox 360. The PS3 has a few other advantages as well. For example, it's mostly compatible with the millions of existing PlayStation (PS1) and PlayStation 2 (PS2) titles, which is a huge plus.
Xbox 360, however, drops the bomb on the PS3 in a few categories as well. It's HD Media Center Extender experience blows away anything Sony offers on the PS3, and it supports live and recorded HDTV over your home network, along with TV show and movie downlaods. Its device connectivity--including direct support for Apple iPod and Sony PSP devices--is top notch. And the hugely compelling Xbox Live service gets even better with Xbox 360. Sony has nothing like it: On the PS3, games are isolated islands of connectivity. Finally, Microsoft took away one of Sony's biggest advantages when it announced a free 1080p upgrade for all existing Xbox 360 units.
Win, lose, or draw, this is an interesting battle to watch.

Re: Xbox360 v/s Playstation3

Sony PS3 loss 'to reach $2bn' by March
New chips may not be enough to stem losses, analysts say

Sony's games division losses will be worse than expected and could exceed $2bn for the fiscal year ending in March, vnunet.com can reveal.

Executives told reporters and analysts in Tokyo today that they blamed a shortfall in sales of the costly PlayStation 3 video games console and the PlayStation Portable (PSP).

Sony's net profit fell more than five per cent to $1.3bn in the last three months of 2006. The games division suffered an operating loss of $455m during the quarter, a fall of almost $1bn from the previous quarter, according to Sony.

"This deterioration was primarily the result of the loss arising from the sale of the PS3 at strategic price points, as well as other charges associated with preparation for the launch of the PS3 platform," the company announced.

Sony has been shocked by the strong sales of Nintendo's much cheaper Wii console, according to analysts, and has had to fight the entrenched strength of Microsoft's Xbox 360, which was launched more than a year ago and now has a wide range of games.

Sony's predicted loss on the first six months of PS3 sales now exceeds the $1.3bn Microsoft is estimated to have lost on Xbox 360 sales over the same period of that console's life-cycle.

Analysts have suggested that Sony will be able to cut PS3 manufacturing costs and retail prices later this year when it revamps the console with smaller ver sions of the Cell CPU and RSX graphics chip.

"How and when the company intends to address the problem of weak demand for PS3 hardware remains unclear. In our view, making the PS3 profitable will not be an easy task," said Eiichi Katayama of Nomura Securities in a briefing to clients.

Although media attention has focused on the high-profile PS3, older games products are also giving cause for concern at Sony.

"We think that a critical stage is approaching for the PSP, which in our view occupies an ambiguous market position as a game console and a multi-purpose audiovisual machine," said Katayama.

Well it looks like the battle is finally coming to an end with Xbox360 as the winner as Sony getting kicked out from the battle of consoles.

Re: Xbox360 v/s Playstation3

Firstly.. I rent my BR-DVD's.. and let me tell you ... a good BR-DVD player is quite costly, for this reason alone the ps3 is well worth it.
But the true capacity of the ps3 has been far from reached with any of the current games, and as with any new platform....it will take more time before there are games available that will truly take advantage of the hardware. That said.. once available.. these games should blow doors off anything made for the Xbox. 1080p is nothing to sneeze at . Considering the whole package of the upper end ps3, the value is considerable... the bells and whistles are definably more than what you would get on the Xbox without paying additional for these features as add-ons.
Since I have a ps3... and I love it my vote go's there

Re: Xbox360 v/s Playstation3

I have been a game developer for 3 years and trust me XBOX 360 is the consle I'd go for any day, because it is easy to write games for the XBOX 360 and also when you play a particular game on PS3 and XBOX 360 you will not find much of a difference, so I guess programming can serve as a tie-breaker, so I can say that XBOX 360 is the console that is, by far the best as of today so I must say that in the previous generation Sony was the clear winner but now it is Microsoft's turn to be the winner and it is the winner of the sixth generation.
