Graphics Card

Had a few other questions. If I go with a newer quad core processor lets say from Best Buy, from there entertainment category, I can upgrade it to a gaming computer no problem right? I would just have to upgrade the graphics card? What would be a good graphics card and what power supply would it need to use it effecently? What are the best things for someone to look at when purchasing a new card? Also, what is the differece between PCI Express; x 16, and 2.0 x 16.

Re: Graphics Card

Upgrading to a quad core needs:

1- a Mother board tht supports the CPU!

Upgradin the Grfc card needs:

1-a Slot from the same type as the grfc card (PCI-E 8x, PCI-E 16x, AGP 4x , AGP 8x ...)
2- A PSU with a minimum of 450 W, but it depends on your grfc card, sometimes you need 800 W, give us the name of you Motherboard , the CPU and the grfc card you want to buy!

Many ppl look for price and capacity of the grfc card, but it is wrong!
an ATI readon 4670 512 MB with 110$ is way better then a Geforce 9500 GT 1GB with less then 100$!
ATI readon 4670 512 MB is waaay powerful then a GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512mb it is even better then GeForce 9800 GX2 1GB and GeForce GTX 260 896 MB
@Chef: Are you always geforcer? lol
one of the things you should look for is the core speeed (GPU Clock) and memory speed (memory clock) of the grfc card, also the memory type (GDDR2, GDDR3, GDDR4, and also the all new GDDR5), i would recommend a GDDR3 as a good for price .

Quote:
New cards that support PCIe 2.0 are backward compatible with PCIe 1.1, thus you can install latest PCIe 2.0 cards on x16 PCIe slot of current or older motherboards.

Latest PCIe 2.0 standards offer double the bandwidth of current PCIe 1.1 standards. Single graphics card are not yet that fast to fully take advantage of the wider bandwidth of PCIe 2.0. It is the multi-GPU or the multi-card set up that benefit most from PCIe 2.0.

PCIe 2.0 and PCIe 1.1 use the x16 PCIe slot format but the PCIe 2.0 slot is capable of sustaining 150 watts while the PCIe 1.1 slot is only capable of 75 watts max.
Quote:
All new graphics cards that support PCIe 2.0 are backward compatible with PCIe 1.1. PCIe 2.0 and 1.1 are standards that BOTH use the same PCIe slot such as the x16 PCIe slot for graphics cards.

PCIe 2.0 has a VERY WIDE bandwidth that could hardly be utilized by a single card. PCIe 2.0's potential is more appropriate for dual or quad graphics card set up.
Conclusion: there is no diffrence btw PCIE 1.1 and PCIE and 2.0 unless you have 2 or more grfc cards.. to explain it more, imagine tht the PCI-e is a cup tht can contain 150 ml, and the pci-e can contain 250 ml, where the best grfc card is 130 ml, so both PCIE 1.1 and PCIE 2.0 can contain (run) the grfc card with no diffrence, unless you may think tht newer grfc cards in the future would be more then 150 ml. so tht way you may spend more $$$ to have a PCI-E 2.0 Mother board!!

an other link, look for the GPU clock anc memory clock of the grfc card, tht's why AMD ATI ois better then Geforce, Geforce has come to less then 3000 Mhz in GPU clock btw ATI has already passed 3660 Mhz!!!
Comparison Of Graphic Chips And Test Configurations : Radeon HD 4870 X2: Four Cards Compared

ATI FoR EveR, there is no Geforce card that beats Radeon HD 4870 X2 4CF 4GB GDDR5 750 MHz GPU CLOCK, 3600 MHz Memory clock, 4x800 stream proccesors!

Re: Graphics Card

Also, with the Quad core and the Dual Cores processors, If you bought one of the new computers on the market, say a Dual Core can you upgrade to a Quad core by just installing a quad core processor in the computer. I have a 2002 computer right now thats using a Pentium 4 CPU with 3.00GHz and 2.00 GB of Ram. I really need to get a new computer

Re: Graphics Card

it depends on the Mother board!!!
if your mother board is quad core compatible then you can upgrade it by just changing the CPU and put againt the glue . ect... be sure to cut the power off the PC before you do it

the CPUs u can throw at a comp depends on the socket of the motherboard

Re: Graphics Card

Im thinking about getting this computer from newegg

Newegg.com - HP Pavilion A6750F(FQ563AA) Phenom X4 9650(2.3GHz) 8GB DDR2 750GB ATI Radeon HD 3200 Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit - Desktop PCs

Its the Phenom X4 9650(2.3GHz) from HP

Now it says its DDR2, can I upgrade to a DDR3 just by installing the new ram stick? Would it be that easy?

I also would like to go with a ATI 4850 graphics card. And probably upgrade my power supply to about 800watt like you said.

What can you do for me with this question thanks!!!!

Re: Graphics Card

no, not if the motherboard doesnt support DDR3

theres a "chain reaction" when it comes to comps, new motherboard may mean new CPU and RAM etc.

Re: Graphics Card

So if its DDR2 then, is that a good memory selection. Most look like they include DDR2. Do you think I can run a 4850 with an upgraded power supply with this unit
