Scrapland Cutscene Issue, Vista

Hello,

I'm trying to get Scrapland up and running on my computer. I initially got an error message saying that the game was meant for basically every version of Windows except Vista. I could tell by the pop-up menu that it was Starforce doing this. I tried a no-cd fix online [which I have no qualms about, seeing as how I purchased the game from the store], but then got a black screen with audio for all video/cutscenes. It would then be unresponsive and I would have to ctrl-alt-del to end the program.

I used a codec detector on my system for these movie files, and apparently the codec is installed [it must be, because I've played the demo on this very system, where the one cutscene in the demo ran just fine].

There is a "fix" online which allows you to bypass all cutscenes in the game, and the game itself seems to run fine, but I'm not playing this game without the story-based cutscenes.

I also heard mention of older Starforce-equipped games wiping out the latest Starforce drivers, so I re-updated them, but I get the same result.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can get this game up and running, either with the CD's or without?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Scrapland Cutscene Issue, Vista

Using GSpot, the codec is MP42 [S-Mpeg 4 version 2].

Just to confirm what GSpot had found, I was able to play the cutscenes in the player provided by GSpot, but I want to view these the proper way: in-game, and at the appropriate times.

I think, based on the initial error message I got before using the crack, that this is a Starforce issue, but why it won't except the latest Starforce drivers [which are installed] is beyond me.

Re: Scrapland Cutscene Issue, Vista

Try running the original game in XP compatibility (without any cracks) mode. Right click ont he game exe, select properties -> compatibility table, enable 'Run this program in compatible mode' and select Windows XP SP2.

Re: Scrapland Cutscene Issue, Vista

I tried that [just uninstalled and reinstalled it] and it did not work.

I even tried an idea brought up on another site, where you run the launch EXE in XP compatibility mode [before installing the game on the system, of course] and that didn't work. I finally tried another notion where certain older Starforce-equipped games will wipe out your system's most recent update of Starforce, therefore I updated it once again, but that didn't work.
I remember having a similar issue when playing GT Legends, with Starforce saying that the drivers were not compatible with Windows Vista, but simply updating my Starforce drivers fixed that problem. I'm not sure why the update wouldn't fix Scrapland as well.

Thumbs up Re: Scrapland Cutscene Issue, Vista

I have the same issue, but with win XP instead.
I tried downloading the Windows Media player codecs for S-Mpeg 4 version 2

But no luck with the movies in-game either.

However, I can confirm the game runs fine in Win98 (where I originally played it)
But my graphics card couldn't support the best res options, so I wanted to play it again on my newer, XP machine.

Looks like i'll have to decide between integrated cutscenes OR decent graphics.

Anyway, if anyone has gotten the cutscenes to work in-game for WinXP reply here and let me know.
