As someone who works in IT, I asked myself this question every day. Why, with all the advances in hardware and software, is IT so complex. Is it because most IT shops don't have a clear vision of IT architecture? Is it that vendors have some sort of evil agenda? Is it that we have simply MADE IT too complex?
I'd be interested in engaging in a conversation with IT pros about this. |

Re: Why is Technology So Complex?
Personaly I think one of the problems is the vast array of anacronims that are used. Most people have no idea what the hek a DMZ or a VPN is.
Allso hardware vendors allways boast the features of the product and dont often state clearly what the product actualy does. Or maybe is simply that the IT industry wants to keep only nerds in the market, As a certified nerd I can sometimes understand why ![]()

Re: Why is Technology So Complex?
I think IT is complex because we BUILD it to be complex, not so much because we want to, but because the infrastructure is built in pieces and parts over time by different people. Then you get to a point where you are so screwed that the only thing you can do is rip & replace, which exec management won't do. So you end up cobbling things together to make them work, which perpetuates the problem.
Down with IT complexity! Simplify! |

Re: Why is Technology So Complex?
Yeah, we Build it complex so that the end users can make use of it with out knowing anything about computers. For example look at the TCP/IP stack. I know opening a simple webpage is the result of a very very complicated set of actions, but for a common man even typing the correct web address is a difficult job.

Re: Why is Technology So Complex?
Let's talk about virtualization. Geeze it is complex to do. Sounds easy, but when you have to manage hundreds of virtual servers, and rearchitect your storage to take advantage of virtual machines, it is crazy. Are you having the same issues?

Re: Why is Technology So Complex?
Is IT Complexity About Increased Cost or Increased Risk?
A few companies are starting to talk about IT complexity, and even fewer are doing something about it. If you have read some posts you’ll get the idea where I'm coming from. So I was reading something from one of the biggest analyst firms are saw this quote: "System complexity increases the total cost of IT, introduces risk and lowers the total business value achieved, and good system management reduces this liability." I’ve always thought about IT complexity as a cost metric. I mean, greater complexity means more people working on IT, more consultants, and hardware/software cost inefficiencies. But what this analyst quote seems to be saying is that complexity also is about risk (no, not RISC, business risk). When you think about it they are right. The risk comes in decreased IT agility, which means a company will be slower to market and slower to serve its customers. It also means that resources that would normally go to innovation projects will keep getting sucked into basic maintenance projects. And it means more money is being spent on simple break/fix. So I’m wondering where you find complexity in your IT organization. Is it in the hardware? Software? Architecture? Management consoles? Give me your ideas. |
