Mysore - Internet - what options are available for visitors?
Hello everyone. I live in Canada and will be going on visit to Mysore for about a month. With these bad economic conditions its most important for me to be able to connect to work "just incase" i need to..
This is a new house that my parents have and so there is no phone connection so i wouldn't want to bother with that (i'm sure there will be delays in getting all that setup and then i dont think the dialup speeds will work for me). Does anyone know if there is anyone (private group of people or individual.. or otherwise) who would just drop a wire/line into my house and provide internet service in such a way? i used to live in bombay before and i know many people who did that but not sure if people in mysore do that yet.. would be much much appreciated if someone can help out. I live near the Marimalappa college area (near the ICICI bank). Thanks in advance guys! Ajit |

You will find lots of Cyber Cafe's at a damn cheap rate I think it's 5 or 10INR per hour.
Otherwise since most mobile sets come with gprs enabled, get a airtel sim and enable Net on Phone for 1 day. I think the charge is 35 or 45INR per day, unlimited bandwidth.

Thanks for the quick response Bakuryu. Cybercafes would be great but they are not open overnight (and canadian daytime would be overnight for India) that's the problem
![]() as for mobile with gprs enabled.. i dont mind getting an airtel sim (i was going to get one anyway.. a pre-paid one) but to get stuff like GPRS enabled doesn't one need a contract? which i cant do because i'm not going to remain there for more than a month.. any suggestions? once again, really appreciate your help. ![]() sorry i didnt mean 'to get stuff GPRS enabled', what i actually meant was i have a phone with GPRS but to get features like 'Net On Phone' enabled for the whole month.. is it even possible to do that without a contract (like a postpaid contract i mean)? Re: Mysore - Internet - what options are available for visitors?
pre paid works fine with gprs and in fact better in most cases, a call to customer care and should be active within hours (generally within a few minutes). These days all mobile service providers provide instant gprs, there might be better deals offered by other service providers, you just need to visit any local mobile shop/store and ask them about gprs offers.

Re: Mysore - Internet - what options are available for visitors?
In India the contract system is not prominent. But you may need the help of a friend with an Indian ID card to get the connection. Once you get it call the customer care and they'll activate GPRS in no time. Once registered you'll get a message from them with the configuration settings for the GPRS gateway.
Once you're done here, just destroy the sim or take it with you. If possible don't pass it to anybody else. |

Thanks for the response Strider.. I must say this site is very impressive with the amount of help that the admins and other people provide.. the picture is definitely much clearer now. I do have friends who could help me out with their ID card, I guess my question is would we have to ask for a postpaid connection (in which case can i just terminate that once i'm leaving, without having to pay any termination fees) or can I get this with a prepaid connection?
and just to repeat.. there is absolutely no way i can get an actual internet broadband connection (residence) for just the 1 month? oops looks like in my zeal i missed bakuryu's response... i guess he already answered the 1st part of my question... *sheepish look*.. thanks for your patience with irritating old me Last edited by bakuryu; 06-03-2009 at 01:18 PM.. |

Re: Mysore - Internet - what options are available for visitors?
You can get broadband connections from local cable operators or from the landline telephone connections (mostly BSNL), even AirTel has broadband options. The only problem is this might have some delays from 1 week to 1 month in getting the connection. The local cable internet should be fast within 1 or 2 days.

Hey thanks 'testnet'.. advice much appreciated.. i'll definitely give all of this a shot and see which one works best.. as i mentioned before, my only concern is that when i get a service i don't want to sign up on a kind of contract where if i cancel the service in 1 month then they charge me some kind of fee for early termination (that's how it works here atleast)
if i can get some/any kind of broadband internet for 1 month without incurring any penalty for cancelling that service after that.. .then WOOHOO that's exactly what i need ![]() |

BSNL broadband has a minimum connection time period, GPRS with pre paid connection would be best for you, one call to customer care will activate/deactivate grps.
