Programming work Question

Please note this question is not asking about learning about programming but trying to get work as a programmer.

I am nearing 39 and have seemed to have developed a passion and facination with programming within the last year I like to do it and wish I had discovered this years back but my work has always been in other area's and I have never worked in the computer field before.I was thinking of trying to make a career out of doing some sort of programming but I am worried I am just too late in the game and employers would not be interested. I am a year away from the big 40 and have more learning to do before I am a reasonable/good programmer but I know I will get there. When I become competant do you think I stand a chance at getting work as a programmer anyway in this current market? I really don't care what exactly I would be doing I just want to work as a programmer somehow. Is this something I should just forget about because of my age and lack of experience in computers or what?

Re: Programming work Question

I think what matters most is having the qualifications to show how good you are. Without those you're relying on confidence and being able to show off a portfolio of programming work you have done (not really sure if it's common to have a "portfolio" as such in programming but I don't see why not).

Sorry I can't be more help, I'm a designer/maker not a programmer
