PC with no HDD - How do I know which to buy?

Long story short: My borther got a computer from work with no HDD in it, so my parents are buying him one for x-mas.
The question is: How do I know the HDD will fit? I've looked inside and I think it is IDE, but I know nothing else. Is there anything I can do?

IDE and SATA slots looks very different. it shouldn't be difficult for you to distinguish between them. Or you can search with your motherboard model and see whether the motherboard supports IDE/SATA or both. it SATA is supported, get a Sata harddisk.

As I said I think it is IDE, that is not the problem. The problem is that it looks like a kind of old computer so I'm not sure which speeds the motherboad can match or if there is any limitation on the amount of memory the HDD can have.

There aren't any such limitations, if the mobo doesn't support the transfer speed, it will perform at the speeds supported.

You can find all the relevant specification details once you search for the mobo model.
