Rather expensive problem - Custom built computer randomly turning off
I'm having some big issues with a recent build i just finished. It will randomly just turn off completely after running for just a few hours, sometimes minutes. It shouldn't be a power supply issue because its and Antec 850W. The motherboard is and XFX running the 780i SLI chipset, 8GB RAM DDR2 800, Core 2 Quad 1333mhz, Nvidia 9800GT. Running Windows 7, Does anyone have any idea where to begin looking to solve this problem?

Re: Rather expensive problem
One thing I can say is that you are running a release canidiate of Windows 7 and not the final release, which comes out Oct 22nd. So a lot of problems on it wont be fixed until the final release... if they are fixed at all. Though I have not tested or ran Windows 7 yet, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to know this, especially since it's developed by Microsoft. I'm not saying that having the final release will be any different in your case, but saying that it could be Windows 7 having issues with something.
Another thing for random reboots besides a bad, well.. a bad lot of things, are video cards. Note also that your video card doesn't have to be bad for it to cause problems either. Hardware acceleration seems to be a common issue with video card issues, in my experience, if it's not a driver problem. One thing I would do, which eliminates a lot of crap, is to run a Live CD if possible. Knoppix is the one I recommend. Download it, burn it to CD and run it. If it still does what it's doing then we know it's probably not a software issue, but hardware instead and we will continue accordingly. Let us know how it goes! |

Re: Rather expensive problem
Re-check your cables. My advice would be to test it with other power supply...

Re: Rather expensive problem
As per nandrasec, it would be wise to test the system with another power supply. Because its new doesn't me its not faulty. Also, based from your explanation - it most probably be a cooling problem.
Please ensure that the processor fan is correctly connected, and the a decent amount of thermal paste is applied. |
