i must be having the most stupid config.

Intel P4 1.7 Ghz
256MB SDRAM 133Mhz
An Intel D845GLLY mobo with no graphics slot(except PCI, of course)
A Seagate 160 GB ATA
a Samsung CDRW drive
a BenQ DW 1650 DVD-RW drive
a LG Studioworks monitor 15"

But I'm going for an upgrade and this is hopefully gonna be my specs/

AMD Athlon 3200+
ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe mobo
512*2 DDR RAM 400 Mhz
A Sparkle GeForce 6600 GT

but despite of my specs, i stupidly load the PC with memory-resident background processes and startup items and this makes it even slower

i ball Keyboard and optical mouse
Antec PX1050B Cabinet with Antec Smartpower 2.0 500W PSU
old Frontec 2200W Speaker + Headphone + Microphone (got to upgrade later)
Microtec 600VA UPS (and yes .. it does provide upto 8mins backup with 500W SMPS + Monitor + Speaker)

Coz ur PSU is a modular one stupid .... infact if u use lower no. of cables , u should get a better backup time ....

Also .. try to put away the 40 GB IDE drive .. just an advice .... make it an external USB drive ....

I don't have space to keep an external USB drive presently. And I still don't understand what's wrong if I keep the IDE HD attached.

That's very much similar to what I had before ..

1800+, A7N266-VM, 256MB DDR, frontech speakers, 40GB HDD, i keyboard and mouse, and a 15" monitor.

There is something called IRQ sharing .... and ur Hdd is occupying one IDE alone .. removing that will remove the corresponding IRQ too ... i.e. lees no. of shared devices ... which in terms should take out some more cycles from the CPU itself ... and specially since u've RAID 0 running .. u should notice quite some diff. in terms of performance. ..

Moreover ... as a sidenote .. that 40 GB drive will really prove a good media for data transfer ....
