Ease of Access / Disability Options

I am a quadriplegic and have always used the Disability Options in Windows 95, 98, 2K, and Xp to increase the mouse cursor speed well beyond the maximum limit allowed in the standard Mouse Settings.

I upgraded to Windows 7 and then 8.1. I found that the Ease of Access section does not have any options for setting mouse speed at all. My mouse is set the fast setting but I cannot even move it one fourth across my screen at 1280 x 800 without using Mouse Keys.

I desperately need to make my mouse MUCH faster.

Any help will be appreciated.

Re: Ease of Access / Disability Options

Have you tried setting the pointer speed in mouse settings? (Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Devices and Printers>Mouse>Pointer Options)

Re: Ease of Access / Disability Options

Thanks for asking but it was already on fast. (veteran windows user).

The option that is new to me in Win 7 & 8.1 is the Enhance Precision. Fortunately I have several friend who work in IT, one of them suggested turning it off and it did the trick. I can actually navigate at 1680 x 1050 with only minor issues.

That might be a good point to add to this sites post on mouse settings.

btw - Your system details almost had me drooling. Like a blueprint almost of what I want in my next build.

Current build :
790FX-GD70 (spent twice as much for features I never used)
945 x4 3.0 running at 3.07 (I'm not in a position to risk burning...)
10 gigs G-Skill - 2x4, 2x1
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7
XFX 5770
WD - 500, 320, & 1T
Rosewill Destroyer w/ 7 fans (yes, it is not quiet but not fan noise, the rushing sound of the air inside the case)

I should of got a faster simpler MB for 1/3 the price and spent more on the CPU, hindsight...

Re: Ease of Access / Disability Options

Good to hear you got it sorted out.

That system took me a while to piece together, I'm on a student budget haha

Those specs aren't bad; your mobo would accept a hex core if you wanted to upgrade or with a better cooler you should easily be able to up speed on your existing one, some people get them up to 3.8: [OFFICIAL] AMD Phenom II x4 Deneb CPU Owner's Club

Any particular reason you're using uneven RAM? I would expect it be faster with just the 2x4.

Re: Ease of Access / Disability Options

Student budget and being on Disability/fixed income is about the same thing except I have a mortgage and utilities.

I was running 2K when I, (my brother did the work with me giving directions), built the system. At the start it only had the 2x1 ram. When I added the 2x4 I moved the old ram to the 3rd and 4th slots without even thinking.

I have to open the case again soon anyway. Do you think it would help if I took the 2x1 out? It is all the same speed but the other specs are different.

I just had it open to take out 2 old whiny hard drives, but in the process of adding the 500gig, the power cable to one of the other drives came loose. Also thinking about switching the 2 Cougar Vortex intake fans in the side panel. Sitting next to a miniature wind tunnel is getting old.

I know I can push the processor farther, even with the existing cooler, it's 95watts and the cooler is good up 120watts. I do everything on my computer beside s**t, sleep, and eat. IF something did go wrong I would be in a major situation, so it is just better to make do and not tempt fate.

Re: Ease of Access / Disability Options

Ahh fair point.

I think it will help to take out the 2x1 sticks, then check your mobo manual for which slots to put the 2x4 in for it to run dual channel properly (some motherboards it's 1&2, others it's 1&3), then just go into the BIOS to ensure it runs them in dual channel.

Smart plan not pushing it further, on my main d/top it's all done by the mobo, like you I don't want to risk pushing it.

Re: Ease of Access / Disability Options

Finally... Got the Demon 8.1 off of my system and Windows 7 re-installed.

Found that the hard drive issue was not the power cable. The issue was the drive did not have a drive letter assigned to it. So the extra ram and the wind noise remain until I get a need to have someone pull the side off.

I will keep the suggestion in mind though. I am hoping to upgrade or replace the entire system soon.

Re: Ease of Access / Disability Options

Good to hear I tried Win8 for a while but couldn't stand it. Trying Win10 on my lappy now, not bad so far but it's a long way from the stability of 7 yet. Might be worth considering for the next upgrade once it's stable as it'll be free plus it actually uses less resources than 7! (or 8 afaik)

Re: Ease of Access / Disability Options

Follow up on the RAM discussion. While doing research on hardware for my next build, (coming soon via Mortgage Refinancing ).

I learned that the uneven RAM is NOT GOOD. I will be removing the 2x1 as soon as possible.
