Seem editing Motorola RZR-V3M/e815/V710, enable Multimedia Studio-MPT, sync with WMP
Have you ever been annoyed that the awesome Motorola Phone that you spent a ton of money on, doesn't do what it's supposed to?

Cool Seem editing Motorola RZR-V3M/e815/V710, enable Multimedia Studio-MPT, sync with WMP

For XP-SP2 and 2000-SP4
Many mobile phone service providers, cripple their phones with the intention of forcing you to buy their ringtones, wallpapers and other services. This sucks since all of these phones have features that enable them to do these things prior to being crippled. Personally, I feel that this is a form of extortion, I think people will still choose to buy specific ringtones and wallpapers they want.

There is a plethora of information regarding seem edits out there, and it can be quite confusing for a novice. I have put together a tutorial based on information I have found and tested myself. There are so many people that have helped put this information out there, and I would like to say thank you to those pioneers that have made this information available to the masses.

This Tutorial is mostly geared towards the Motorola RZR V3M (This phone is the one I own, and have tested all of these seem edits with)
Some of these seem edits will also work with other Motorola phones such as V710, and e815 (I have also tested these edits with e815)
Depending on your service provider, some edits may or may not work for you. I have not yet been able to use "Apply as Ringtone" to any mp3 file on the V3M, but it did work on the e815. (However, by enabling MPT-Multimedia Studio, you should be able to copy .mp3 files to your phone and use them as ringtones.)

I have also managed to successfully sync my phone with Windows Media Player, and copy music to my phone, so I will include instructions for this.

I DO NOT AND WILL NOT EXCEPT ANY RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU MESS UP YOUR PHONE, USE THIS INFORMATION AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I HAVE ALSO INCLUDED LINKS WHERE I CAN, SO THAT YOU CAN VIEW THE ORIGINAL SOURCE OF THIS INFORMATION.

I WILL ALSO INDICATE WHEN YOU SHOULD BACK UP INFORMATION, AGAIN IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO DO THIS AND HOSE YOUR PHONE, YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO REPAIR IT YOURSELF AND LIKELY YOU WILL HAVE VOIDED ANY WARRANTY BY YOUR SERVICE PROVIDER.

IF YOU CHOOSE TO DO YOUR OWN SEEM EDITING, BE AWARE THAT YOUR SERVICE PROVIDER WILL BE ABLE TO TELL AND MAY NULL/VOID YOUR WARRANTY. THIS IS ANOTHER GOOD REASON TO BACK UP, AS YOU CAN THEN REPLACE EDITS WITH ORIGINAL SEEM.

DO NOT ATTEMPT ANY OF THESE PARTICULAR SEEM EDITS WITH OTHER PHONES, THESE ARE SPECIFIC TO MOTOROLA .

To start with, you will need a USB data cable for your phone, you CANNOT do this via Bluetooth.

I found a USB cable on ebay for about $5.00, but you can purchase one from Motorola which includes MPT, for about $40.00. MPT is the only software that you will actually need to purchase to make use of some parts of this tutorial, all else is free and legal.

You will need to download the following software:

Motorola Software Update - (direct download link from Motorola)
(this is used to put your phone in a special service mode that allows for seem editing.)

P2KSeem

I have used a lot of (but not all of) the information from Mark Ventura's pages, which while awesome in it's quantity and scope of information and help, I found them a little bit scattered. (Sorry Mark ;-) )

I have broken this tutorial down into a few parts, and I have put them in the order of what I thought was the best and easiest way to edit this phone. Please read everything carefully, as a missed step could prevent you from completing this tutorial.

Part 1)
Installing software, and preparing your phone for editing.

First:-
Download and install Motorola Software Update. (link above) This will also install necessary drivers for your phone.

After you have installed, (although not absolutely required) I would suggest rebooting.

Do not start up MSU (Motorola Software Update) yet.

Plug in your phone using your USB data cord with a direct connection (meaning not through a hub), and your OS will start up "Found New Hardware Wizard" let the installation of USB modem find the driver automatically and install it.

UNPLUG your phone from USB cable.

Start up MSU (Motorola Software Update)

For the moment you will not see anything you need to in MSU (Motorola Software Update) just leave it on in the background and minimize it.

RE-PLUGIN your phone to USB cable.

The "Found New Hardware Wizard" will start up again. You will need to let your OS install a number of additional devices, so keep installing Motorola devices automatically until "Found New Hardware Wizard" has finished completely.
DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR PHONE WHILE DEVICES ARE INSTALLING.

(Although not necessary) quit software, and UNPLUG phone.

RE-START MSU, then RE-PLUGIN phone.

MSU will detect your phone (this may take a minute.) and you should see (if everything is working correctly) that the ESN # is now showing. This means your device is ready to edit. (Do not worry that the carrier and model show as N/A, this is normal)

Part 2)
Seem Editing

If you are a real enthusiast, and want more of a technical explanation of what it is you are doing, please refer to Mark Ventura's pages here. I will attempt to leave out as much technical jargon as possible, so that novices that just want to follow the process, are not overwhelmed by too much technical information.

Please read carefully, as incorrectly following instructions can *@!* your phone.

Start up MSU, and wait for your ESN # to be detected. (Do not worry that the carrier and model show as N/A, this is OK)

Extract/decompress P2KSeem to a folder of your choice, and start p2kseem.exe

(As long as MSU has detected your phone and your ESN # is showing, p2kseem should also show as being connected (also may take a minute)- you will find this information in the status bar at the bottom left hand corner of the p2kseem program.)

After you have opened up P2KSeem, you will see the following boxes on the right hand side.

Bytes (h)

Seem

Record

These boxes are the ones we will edit to load information from your phone.

1) In box #1 - "Bytes (h)" type 7a (then hit the enter/return button on the keyboard)

2) In box #2 - "Seem"
Type 2742 FOR MOTOROLA E815/V3C/V3M Type 041a FOR MOTOROLA - V710 - (then hit the enter/return button on the keyboard)

3) In box #3 - "Record" type 1 (then hit the enter/return button on the keyboard)

Now hit the "load from phone" button under box #2, and the window should look something like this.

Now we are almost ready to start our seem edits.... but first.....

HERE IS WHERE YOU NEED TO SAVE, BEFORE WE MAKE ANY CHANGES.

If your screen looks similar (may not be exact) to the one above go ahead and click on "Save to file" and name it "my-original.seem" or something else that will help you remember what it is.

PUT THIS FILE SOMEWHERE REALLY SAFE, IT IS YOUR ONLY SOURCE OF BACKUP AT THIS TIME.

The following explanation, is just to help you understand navigating the "P2KSeem" screen.

Quote:
When the file is first loaded by pressing "load from phone" as above, look at box #4 (check images above) called "Offset:". There should always be a 4 digit number here, this is the number we want to keep our eye on.

We can now break these Offset numbers into two parts, row number and column number, just like a bar graph.

Each row starts with a six digit number, to figure out our actual row number we will drop six of the seven 0's and call them rows 0 through 7.

Next we have sixteen columns in pairs of digits & letters, which we break down as follows.
The first 10 columns of pairs, we will name 0-9, and the next 6 we will name a-f.
For example:-
If we wish to edit Offset 0024 (or 24)

First we would look for row 2 (or 000020 or 3rd row down) and then we need to find the column pair for number 4 (remember that we started our columns at 0) so this would be the 5th pair from the left.

Now check the "Offset:" box (which in the image above is labeled #4) and it should read 0024.

The last piece of information we need to know is the Bit # to edit.
You will see 7 check boxes called bits, these are like on/off switches for the features of your phone.

Ok, hopefully you have followed me so far, and we will now start our edits.

I'll walk through this first one with you

We are going to edit - Offset 6A (or 006a) and Bit 0
[This will enable Bluetooth Or USB file transfer in MPT (Motorola Phone Tools)plus E815 OBEX- check this to enable]

This translates to row 7 or (000060), column 11 or (a)

(Edit made 02/07/2007, it has been pointed out that I was not entirely clear with this part, and the information was not complete)

When finished click on save to phone

Here is a list of the most common Offsets and Bits that can be edited using seem 2742 (box #2) for the E815/V3C/V3M or seem (box #2) 041a for V710
You can find more info on Mark Ventura's pages

Offset 6A Bit 0 - Bluetooth Or USB file transfer in MPT (plus E815 OBEX) - check to enable.
Offset 62 Bit 5 - Enable editing of PIX servers - check to enable. (For details see... PHP Pix Place Server available!) Note: this does not work on the Verizon V3C/V3M firmware.
Offset 75 Bit 5 - Transflash Copy/Move Option - check to enable
Offset 1D Bit 3 - Motorola Startup Animation - check to enable, uncheck for "logo only"
Offset 23 Bit 5 - Roaming Call Guard(Settings > In Call Setup > Call Guard) - Check to enable.
Offset 29 Bit 1 - Menu Items: Settings > Security > Lock Keypad - check to enable (to use on V710/E815 press [menu] *, on V3C press [CLR] *)
Offset 31 Bit 0 - Motorola Shutdown Animation - check to enable.
Offset 06 Bit 1 - Ringtone: Siren - check to enable
Offset 38 Bit 1 - Ringtone: Continental - check to enable
Offset 38 Bit 2 - Ringtone: Classic - check to enable
Offset 38 Bit 3 - Ringtone: Attention - check to enable
Offset 3B Bit 0 - Ringtone: Moonlit Haze - check to enable
Offset 4B Bit 0 - GPS icon indicator - Check for CrossHair, Uncheck for Satelite
Offset 5A Bit 7 - File Access in QPST - Check to Unlock, Uncheck Lock
Offset 5e Bit 6 - Menu Items: Picture Setup > Shutter Tone > None as Choice - Check to allow NONE, uncheck to not
Offset 5F Bit 7 - Menu Items: Video Setup > Video Quality - Check to have choice, uncheck to Not. NOTE: this setting has no use, as the video quality defaults set to HIGH.
Offset 74 Bit 7 - Digital Indicator (1X or D) - Check for 1X, Uncheck for D
Offset 75 Bit 4 - Apply As Ring Tone Menu Option - Check to Disabled, uncheck to Enabled

I have found that some of these do not necessarily work for me, so depending on your service provider, only some of these edits will work for you.

Here is a more detailed list of some other 2742 Seem edits

For V3C (firmware .02 or .03) - same as V3M

For V3C (firmware .04) Check here for pre-edited seem, as this one is a little more complicated.

Additional Seem edits (make sure you save backups before you edit these seems)

Offset 64 Bit 5 - Remove the RE: & FW: from text messages being sent part1 - Uncheck

Offset 64 Bit 6 - Remove the RE: & FW: from text messages being sent part2 - Uncheck

That's it for seem edits...... just google, or look on Mark Ventura's pages for more info.

Part 4)
Syncing with Windows Media Player

This is directly copied from Mark Ventura's pages

Connect the phone to a USB Port directly on the PC (do not use a USB Hub).

Start up Windows Media Player first, and go to the "Sync" tab.

On the phone, go to Menu -> Get It Now -> Get Tunes and Tones -> Sync Music... Windows may try to install additional drivers... If it does, wait for it to complete.

The Syns tab should then show your phone as a portable device. Just drag over your tunes to the "sync list" and when you are ready, hit the "Start Sync" button at the bottom of the "sync list" (this is how it shows up in WMP 11, I am not sure for other versions)
Keep in mind WMP will convert these to .wma files, so you will not be able to use them as ringtones.

If this does not work for you, check Mark Ventura's web pages for more details in switching the USB Motorola driver with another version.

Awesome guide. Repped & Digged. I was not so familiar with mobile hacking. This guide will make it change. I'll try it soon on my friend's RZR.

Thank you guys for the comments, it is really cool when you have all these things working on your phone. My Razr is the 2nd Moto phone I have owned and tweaked... but I think the e815 that I had 1st was more tweakable, I liked it better... but I spilled coffee all over it so the razr was cheap

A long guide dude.. I have not read it yet.. but will surely read it....

I did not know,, that seem could be edited. When i wanted to increase the SMS memory of my L6, i was told by many forums that sms on java phones are stored in seem memory, which cannot be edited.. Now i think i will try this out on my L6..

I'm not familiar with L6, I assume it is a Motorola If it isn't, this guide will not work for you, but there are other ways of editing phones too. I know that you can use Bitpm to tweak some LG phones. If it is a Moto phone I would check that these edits are compatible 1st. There are all kinds of links in this guide that will take you to sites with good information.

yes L6 is a motorola phone ... but these seem edits won't work on it .... try searching the forums (MotoModders.net) for further info ....
the best way to increase sms memory is to flash your phone with a monster pack which already has this seem edit integrated within it .... flashing is much more easier and safer than seem edit ....

Re: Seem editing Motorola RZR-V3M/e815/V710, enable Multimedia Studio-MPT, sync with WMP

I find this interesting, I have thought about flashing my phone with other firmware from different Service Providers, but from what I have been able to tell, you can completely hose your phone and it is more difficult to replace original firmware than replace original seem... at least for my phone. But the upside seems (no pun intended ) to be that the firmware flash can open up a few more features ... (if the right firmware is available)
I will check it out, but I have had really good success with seem editing on my Moto e815 and Razr V3m. As you say... it really depends on the phone
