How to Get a Free `Static IP`

Talking How to Get a Free `Static IP`

This is my first guide. Don't hurt me

Ever wanted to get a host but don't have the money for it? Well, yeah, a lot of people will say that there a cheap ones, but what can get any cheaper than free?! Well, I just realized how to do this, and it will work as a static IP for many things, such as hosting a website from your computer, hosting a game, or hosting mainly anything that you'd like! Ok, lets get started!

Here are the the tools you will need:

A No-IP.com account -
No-IP.com Dynamic Updating Client -
WAMP Server (optional - only if you're making a website server) -

Once you've made an account on No-IP.com, make sure you're logged in and you're at . Click Add a Host and enter your details in this order:

Hostname: What you want your URL to be. You can change the ending of the URL with the dropdown menu.
Host Type: DNS Host (A) for a game host, Port 80 Redirect for a website. Ignore the rest of the options unless you know what you're doing.
IP Address: If you are on the computer that you want as the host, then leave it. If not, you need to know the IP address of the hosts computer. To find out, go onto the host computer and go to this url:
Leave the rest alone...

Once you're done with that, click Create Host! Ok, well, now you're probably trying to go to that link that you made on No-Ip.com. It won't work. That's because you need to install the No-IP.com DUC (Dynamic Updating Client). Once installed, tell it your No-IP.com username and password, and it will automatically list the URL(s) that you registered on the No-IP.com website. Ok, now, here's the tricky part. You need to port forward. A lot of people will think 'Well this is supposed to be the alternative to port forwarding... right?' Wrong. If you port forward without this, it will eventually stop working. Go and find your router and set up port forwarding. If you are hosting a website, the port will be 80. If it is a game, then you should know the ports.

NOW You're almost done! Ok, if you're hosting a website, then keep on reading. If you're hosting a game, you're done. You should know what to do from here.

Now you will need to install WAMP for the website. Apache is an alternative, but WAMP is a package of Apache, MySQL, and PHP for Windows. Once it's all installed, you can finally host your website. Good job ! Have fun!

PS: The URL is the link that is in the No-IP DUC program. Just tell poeple to go to that and they will go to your website. You will be able to also by a domain name and direct it to the URL that you made with No-IP. OR, you could use a redirect service. I would recommend .

Congrats for your first Guide. I think you can include a few screenshots to make it a bit more professional.

Good work, keep them coming.

Re: How to Get a Free `Static IP`

@Strider: Wrong. It does work. That's why I mentioned port forwarding. I have a shared IP at my dads house and I port forwarded. All works fine! Here, look. This is my ip: 71.234.55.161 and my server registration page pops up and works just fine! So, to answer baku's question; yes, it does work on shared IPs... I also may be wrong, if you're talking about something else, but I'm 99.9999% sure that it will work on shared IPs

Sometimes your IP is shared and you do not have access to the main router, like many users under some local ISP may use a single IP, or like the GPRS users in Airtel. Most of these use NAT.

What you are talking is the connection is shared within a house and you have access to the main router to port forward.

i use BSNL UL plus 750 plan.

Shared IPs work at the ISP end. All the customers in an area will use a single IP to the internet and the ISP router will distribute the traffic to the individual computers in it's locality.

ie. If you and your neighbor are using an ISP with a shared IP and both of you checked your IP with IPChicken, it'll show the same address.

Re: How to Get a Free `Static IP`

But port forwarding would still work though, right? Because the router has to know the IP, and the port request goes to both routers. The first one doesn't know what to do, but the one that has port forwarding on it does, so should it work? And LOL, you signed up! I checked the MySQL

EDIT:
Sorry, didn't read Baku's reply. Yeah, I'm talking about all in one house, so I'm obviously thinking of something else...
