CD/DVD drives not recognized

Hey, I'm not much of a computer specialist, was wondering could anyone help me..?

I recently did a drive cleanup, wanting to free up some space. Ever since, niether of my hard drives have been able to recognise any disks that I put in them, I've tried with a fair few just to make sure. Once I put the disk in, computer makes a bit of noise - then it goes quiet and literally nothing happens.

I've checked on My Computer to see if the computer knows that there is a disk inside and it doesn't..

A friend suggested checking the BIOS and seeing if IDE devices are set to autodetect or disabled, they were set to autodetect, so nothing out of the ordinary there.

I'm not a Windows Vista user - I use Windows XP Professional

Please help me

Are you referring to inserting a CD/DVD to the drive?

Re: Hard drives wont recognise disks

Ok.. few more question

Can you see the CD/DVD drive letter in My computer?

If yes can you right click on it and click Eject?

Is the drive popping out on pressing the eject button in front of it?

Re: Hard drives wont recognise disks

Hmm.. Sees like a hardware problem. If you are a bit of advanced user open up the CPU cabinet and check the power & data cables to your CD drive. Are you able to eject the drive by pressing the Eject switch of your CD drive?

Re: CD/DVD drivers not recognized

First go into BIOS and see if your IDE drivers are recognized. if not, either change the IDE cable and see, or either your CD/DVD drive or te IDE slot of the motherboard has been damaged.

If you can see them recognized in BIOS boot into Windows and open Device manager. (Press Win+Pause/Break key from keyboard and then click Device manager")

There expand DVD/CD rom drives and see if your drivers are listed there and whether there is any yellow mark beside them.

If you see that there is a yellow mark beside your drivers : follow this kb article and modify the registry settings as said : You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording program in Windows XP: "error code 31"

If you see your drives listed there, and still not visible in My Computer, right click on the drives and choose "Uninstall". Reboot Windows and then Windows should automatically find the new hardware and install the drivers.
