Power outage has caused problems...

Two days ago my house lost and regained power several times throughout a storm. Yesterday when I tried to use the computer for the first time, I couldn't get it to boot. For the first several times the computer would rev up like normal, but stop after 1 or 2 seconds, before any setup screens, and then a second later would try again. It would do this over and over. Twice it did get to the setup screen, but didn't respond to my keystrokes, and died again.

After going through this several times, the computer finally stopped doing the rev up thing, and just makes very slight noises that aren't all that promising. I opened up the case and unplugged the hard drive, hoping to determine if that is the problem. The computer is behaving the same way without the harddrive though, which makes me believe it could be a power supply or motherboard issue. I'm just not sure how to tell which, especially since I'm not even getting the BIOS diagnostic beeps.

The other thing that may or may not matter is that the computer was in hibernate mode when this happened. Not sure if that could mess up the harddrive. The computer is running XP Pro, its about a year old. I'm not sure on the exact specs, and since I can't turn on the computer, I'd have to dig through receipts to get those correct.

Let me know if there are any other details that would be helpful. Thanks for any ideas!

It sounds like to me that your motherboard got fried.

When you turn the system ON, does the CPU fan start too ?

Can you enter the BIOS setup screen ?
