Question Hardware Related Problem

The following is an excerpt from the error report Vista returned to me after a repeated failure (hardware related) :

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Problem caused by computer hardware :

This problem was caused by an unrecoverable hardware error that caused the operating system to stop functioning.

Troubleshooting : ---------------------------------------------------------

If you have received this error more than once, it could indicate a serious problem with your computer. We recommend that you do the following:

1. Back up your files to avoid data loss in case of a complete hardware failure.
2. Contact the original manufacturer of your computer to determine the specific component which is failing.

Additional technical information :

Although we know the problem is caused by a hardware component, the error report does not contain enough information to tell us the specific component. It is likely that the problem is being caused by one of the following computer components:

1) Random Access Memory (RAM)
2) System board
3) Central Processing Unit (CPU)
4) Power supply

************************************************** ************

Description of the events that cause / lead to the failure :

When I am using the Laptop normally (watching Movies, transferring data etc) there are no problems.... But when I play a game (I ensure maximum resources are free by exiting all messengers etc and all unwanted processes are killed off including taskeng.exe and dwm.exe) ; the CPU for some reason starts reading a lotta things for a long time, the game almost goes into freeze mode.... If the game recovers, then generally within a min the game begins again, otherwise the game hangs.... I have to bring up Task Manager (Ctrl + Alt + Del) and try to kill off the process related to the game.... Normally a successful killing off of that process is impossible and I have to shut down the Laptop (by pressing + holding the power button for 5 secs)....

This whole event (game freezes + Vista crash and have to manually shut down) has happened a lot.... Like 10-15 times....

************************************************** ************

Any help will be appreciated....

Re: Hardware Related Problem

Does it happen with all games ? it might be a driver problem, or the game's incompatibility with Vista.

I have the latest drivers "8-1_vista32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_57724" installed and FIFA 08 is Vista supported (and recommended)....

Re: Hardware Related Problem

So it happens only for FIFA08 ??

And i think you are using ATi Catalyst 8.1 drivers. The latest is Ati Catalyst 8.3
http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx

Also there are patches for FIFA08. Did you apply them ?

Patch 1 gives an unusual error :

"Old file not found.... However, a file with the same name was found. No update done since the file contents do not match"

I'm sure the new drivers will help, will try to update them soon and report back....
