Blinking desktop
Hi. I'm having a very weird problem with my computer that just started last night. My wife said she was checking emails, downloading music, and playing music and that's when it started. The icons on the desktop and the toolbar at the bottom will disappear every 10 seconds or so, then come back. I can't get into My Document or Control panel b/c they disappear as well when it blinks. I can however run Internet Explorer or Adware or Norton and other programs. I tried doing a System Restore but that didn't work. Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it? Keep in mind I'm computer illiterate, I'm not even sure if this is the right forum.

Re: Blinking desktop
Reboot and when the computer starts, press the del (delete) key from the keyboard repeatedly and enter BIOS and see if you notice the same effects on the screen.
if in BIOS also your screen flickers, then it's either your monitor/lcd problem or graphics card/chipset problem. if the BIOS screen doesn't flicker press F10 and reboot and press F8 repeatedly and boot into Windows Safe Mode and notice if the screen flickers in safe mode.

Re: Blinking desktop
Nah brother, I'm having the same problem.
I keep my computer in top shape. I was listening to music, and my... desktop crashes. Which is something I never thought to be possible. Computer is still running, just the desktop crashes. So I do a hard reboot, and I'm amused to find that my desktop is blinking. No particular pattern, about every 20 seconds or so. 20 seconds on, 20 seconds off. Every time it blinks off, it exits out of everything that's running. Here's the real kicker though... it exits out of everything EXCEPT my utility programs. I quickly opened up CCleaner and AVG before it blinked off, and to my surprise they didn't quit. So I run every available diagnostic and fix in CCleaner to no avail, it can't find a single problem. I'm about 90% done with AVG now, I unplugged the Ethernet cable in case it was a virus, but I doubt it is. I've been trying to back it up in some kind of way, or get some important files off of it, but all folders and drive windows close, including transfer windows. I even checked up all the startup processes, nothing out of the ordinary. No running processes out of the ordinary, either. I even tried ending any and all processes that weren't crucial to keeping the computer running, still nothing. I'm at a total loss here, and I'm just about ready to give up and just wipe the thing. Hope the extra information helps. Good to know I'm not the only one with the problem. |

Re: Blinking desktop
Oh, and in response to Bakuryu, I already checked the BIOS, and tried running in safe mode. BIOS was fine, it's something wrong with windows. Still blinks in safe mode.

Re: Blinking desktop
Can you open taskmanager ? See if explorer.exe is running ? If it's not running, from task Manager, File -> New Task, type explorer and press enter. See if you get back your desktop.
