Hi,
I have some problem with my old horse. My computer's specification is
Processor: Intel P4 2.4GHz Prescott 1 MB L2 CAche

RAM: One PC 333 DDR1 Zion 256 MB and One 1 GB
SMPS: iBall 400 Watt
DVD: 1 Samsung DVD ROM 1 Samsung DVD Writer

My computer stops working suddenly. Even Mouse and Keyboard is not working. I have to switch off my computer and reboot again. Every thing is hanged.
I have encountered problem 2 times today in 4 hours interval. But after that I am working for 4 hours. No problem is there.
Can any one tell what is the exact problem with this computer and that is the solution?

Re: My Computer Stops working suddenly

use speedfan and monitor the temps, and see whether the system is overheating.

run memtest and check your memory (ram).

Re: My Computer Stops working suddenly

the temps you mentioned are in Centigrade or Fahrenheit ?? if it's 70C then your system is overheating, make sure there's proper air circulation inside the cabinet and the heatsink is properly seated over the processor or get a new heatsink.

To run memtest : download the bootable iso file from the link. Extract the iso from the zip file.
Use IsoRecorder and burn the iso on a blank CD. Boot from the CD and follow the on screen instructions.

Re: My Computer Stops working suddenly

Did you check your memory using memtest ?

And 50C is quite high for startup temperature, and you say the temp goes up to 70C, check that the heat sink is properly seated over the processor.

Re: My Computer Stops working suddenly

Hi,
The reason your computer freezes is because there seems to be a problem with the ram. The fact that the mouse and keyboard freezes is a clear indication that there seems to be some communitcation problem with the ram. I myself had this problem in the past. you may have opened the cabinet recently and disturbed the ram. Did you recently open the casing to do any hardware upgradations? or did u add any ram memory recently? Even if you havent i suggest that i remove both the ram and clean them with iso propyl alcohol (IPA) that is readily available in any electronics shop. Also try to use a syringe to spray some alcohol into the ram slots and try cleaning gently with a tooth brush or something. The corrosion will be removed pretty effectively by the IPA.

PS: make sure u turn off the supply before you aply the IPA! And let it dry well before you switch it back on!

Regards,
Anand

Re: My Computer Stops working suddenly

it might be a problem with the new memory. Run memtest for a couple of hours and see if it throws up any errors.

Re: My Computer Stops working suddenly

Oh , then if you have the expertise you might as well remove the new ram . clean the contact edges(just in case)and also clean the inner contacts in the ram slot that you had the new ram placed. I suggest you use a clean soft cotton cloth to clean the ram and an old brush to clean the ram slots so it will remove the rust. Since its not been used for a long time the dust might have settled and hinders the electical contact. I believe you get IPA (Iso Propyl Alcohol) as sprays also these days. you might as well use that with the ram slots. If you are not to surew of how to remove the new ram thats just been added theni suggest you seek the help of a computer technician .

Good Day!
Anand
