Hi guys,
I have usb External hdd ( Seagate FreeAgent DESK 1TB) The problem is that this drive makes clicking sounds, I did Error-Checking with "Scan for and attemt recovery of bad sectors" on.. and it fixed everything. After some time error appeared again, but this time when I do Error checking it freezes. I turned both options on(Scan for and attemt recovery of bad sectors & Automatically fix file system errors) and now there is some kind of file processing thing going on. I hope my files won't be deleted.. So, what should I do if this disc checking won't help ? I did like ~7 error checkings before, but after some time clicking sound starts again.. Would this error be fixed if I attached my HDD with sata connection ? ( I mean taking out from the case and connecting it to motherboard) ? What other things may I try doing ? |

Re: External HDD error
Try to format the partition if checking for error freezes. And always first use the Safely Remove Hardware feature to remove the usb drive and then manualy pull out the usb cable.

Re: External HDD error
The heads are failing on your drive. These heads are so close to the platters on the drive that even a smoke particle can cause damage to the heads. Seagate drives have a coating to protect the magnetic layers of the drive and tend to flake off causing problems with the heads. The reason the disk check worked is probably because when you do a full check the drive the heads go over the entire drive which can fling these flakes to different spots inside the drive. You need to get another drive and do your best to transfer the data on it to another drive. If you're unable to copy files, throw it in the freezer for about an hour and then try again. In general, bad sectors pretty much start when the magnetic media the platters have on them start to degrade.
