Randomly losing red color on LCD monitor

I have this really annoying problem: The red color on my LCD monitor randomly disappears. I know it's not the monitor cause I've plugged it into my laptop and everything seems fine. Tried removing the video card and reinstalling (including the drivers) it but this doesn't seem to change anything. The worst thing is I can't reproduce the problem whenever I want so I have no idea what is causing it. Any help will be appreciated

Re: Randomly losing red color on LCD monitor

OK what's most likely going on here is not the GPU it's self but the VGA Output socket on the GPU, it could be a bad connection on the PC circuit board, or a wire inside the socket has come apart.

If you GPU is still under warranty, i would recommend taking it back and getting a brand new one instead of trying to fix it yourself.

Good Luck,

Re: Randomly losing red color on LCD monitor

You may have to buy a new GPU, but first to verify that it is the GPU, you should take it out and try it in another computer.

Re: Randomly losing red color on LCD monitor

Hmm that will be really hard to do as I can't reproduce the problem whenever I want. I mean this thing happened to me 2-3 times about a month ago and has disappeared since. Until yesterday that is. And today the colors are fine again.

Re: Randomly losing red color on LCD monitor

Hmmm, this could even be down to overheating then. please try to test it in another computer to rule out a bad PCI-E slot or even a bad motherboard.

Re: Randomly losing red color on LCD monitor

Ok I will try to find someplace to test it. Forgot to add that I am with geforce 8800gt which has two outputs and I tried them both while the red color was gone with the same result.

Re: Randomly losing red color on LCD monitor

Oh OK, I didn't know that, this i think is down to overheating, i'm afraid you may have to replace it, but give it a try in another PC, and see how it goes.

Re: Randomly losing red color on LCD monitor

I've just installed SpeedFan to check the temperatures. And the GPU peaked at 84C while sc2 was running (this is the most graphic intensive game I have). Idle temp is about 73C. I'll try to check the next time the problem occurs. I may try increasing the fan speed a bit as this temp seems high. The strange thing is that I've been running this configuration for more than 2 years and I've never had an overheating problem even during the summer.

Re: Randomly losing red color on LCD monitor

This temp is too high, so we have found what is wrong here, it's the GPU, you are going to have to get it replaced mate, sorry about that. there noting else you can do, my cards idle temp is 35 C. and with load 40-50 C.
