Motherboard shot? or not? Help

I have compaq presario cq56 115dx notebook. Hit the power button, caps lock blinks once every 5 seconds, hp indicates from the blink rate, that the motherboard needs replacing.
So I pressed Fn and power button at same time, and the pc booted up, the pc is up and running.
Why would pressing Fn and power button at same time bring the system up, if the motherboard is gone?
