IE consuming CPU when not loaded
I am running Vista Ultimate. After restarting and not loading Internet
Explorer, the iexplore.exe process none the less loads and begins to immediately consume 30-50% of my CPU on a constant basis, even though Internet Explorer is not visible in the toolbar. If I use Task Manager to forcibly end the iexplore.exe process, it will restart itself after about one minute. Any ideas as to what could be causing this, and more importantly how to fix it? |

"Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/ IE 7 has stricter security than IE 6, so malicious attacks that might not have caused a problem for IE 6 can cause IE 7 to react. Viruses and other malicious software (collectively known as malware) can be very hard to detect, and even harder to remove. Sometimes, malware is impossible to remove, no matter what you try. (More on that later.) If you suspect your computer is infected, follow these steps: 1) If you have anti-virus and anti-spyware programs already installed on your computer, update the programs and scan your computer. With luck, the programs will detect and remove the problem. 2) If the scan doesn't produce results, contact the program's technical support. Most of the major anti-virus/spyware programs will help you to remove an infection that their software did not detect. 3) Scan your system with /several/ of the better free online scanners, such as: Kaspersky Antivirus (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner) NOD32 (http://www.eset.com/download/index.php) - free 30-day trial Trend Micro Housecall (http://housecall.trendmicro.com) Panda ActiveScan (http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan) Sophos (http://www.sophos.com/products/free-...tion-test.html) McAfee Free Scan (http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp) Symantec Security Check (http://security.symantec.com) Avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html) GrisSoft AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/doc/34/ww/crp/0) 4) HijackThis (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php) is an advanced scanner for spyware. You can post its logs to http://spywarewarrior.com/viewforum.php?f=5 (among other places) and get expert analysis of what's on your computer. 5) Finally, if none of the above remove the malware, it may be time to show the computer to a professional. Here's a sobering thought: There may be nothing at all that you can do to remove an infection, no matter what you try. That's because some infections compromise your computer to the point where you can no longer rely on what the operating system is telling you. Rootkits are an example of this kind of infection. In that case, your only way out is to erase your hard disk and reinstall everything from scratch. "Help I Got Hacked. Re: IE consuming CPU when not loaded
I'm sorry, I should have mentioned that HijackThis didn't turn up anything
suspicious. I am typically a Firefox user, and don't use IE except when it's launched by some other program (Trillian, generally). I've performed a "reset" on IE7 and the problem still persists. I have not installed any software recently. Re: IE consuming CPU when not loaded
Again, apologies for not including that I run Symantec Corp, which has not
detected anything, and Hijackthis looks clean. Again, I use FF as my primary browser, not IE, and have not visited any untrustworthy sites in IE. Is there any reason IE would be opening itself, or any other system process that could be masquerading as IE (indexing, etc)? Re: IE consuming CPU when not loaded
As a Ph.D. candidate in Electrical Engineering, a hardware developer, and
computer technician for our lab, I consider myself capable of reading a HijackThis log. All entries in the HijackThis log are for properly functioning, user installed software, or are entries that should otherwise be there. If you don't consider me competent and would like to look at it yourself, I would be more than happy to post it here. In the meantime Malware programs have returned no results, and the same with AV software. We do not post or interpret HJT logs in public newsgroups. You can post it
in any of the forums I mentioned in my first reply, then post a link to the forum thread. jwischka wrote: > As a Ph.D. candidate in Electrical Engineering, a hardware developer, and > computer technician for our lab, I consider myself capable of reading a > HijackThis log. Re: IE consuming CPU when not loaded
As I've previously noted, I feel that I'm perfectly capable of reading a HJT
log on my own, and apparently so do the people who pay me to do so. Assuming that I post it to one of your forums and there's nothing wrong, do you have any other suggestions? I'm not trying to be argumentative, and I realize that the typical person who encounters this problem is a 65 year old pensioner who has difficulty with email, but I do actually have a fair amount of technical expertise and somewhat feel like I'm getting the idiot's treatment here.
